Early Access Video: The $30 Dollar Vise

Friends:

I'm especially proud of this one. This vise can be built with handtools in about a day. It costs around $30 and it works really well. After a lot of searching and experimenting, I've finally come up with a vise design that I can stand behind.

If you've built a few of the Woodwork for Humans projects, then you can do this. You'll need a few simple metal-working tools like a hacksaw and some drill bits, but the rest of the project is straight-forward sawing, boring, and planing.

The final vise is based off the English pattern Face Vice, a long-standing design that probably led to the modern cast-iron vise. It's a simple and solid way of holding work and this version really gets the job done.

Thanks for supporting this ambitious build!

Happy Saturday!

Beginner here. I have the screw jack on order. I HOPE to fix it to Workpro steel-framed workbench but using 4” x 2” softwood top — 4” thick. Any ideas? ALSO, has anybody tried a steel rod with linear bearings instead of a dowel for guide arm? Some say that does not work. I am grateful. Patrick Dowling

Here's a video discussing why they're better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lp6CyTsa8s4

Never even occurred to me to try the zero flute on wood. Thanks!

Rex Krueger

Crap! I knew I forgot something! Stand by for emergency post!

Rex Krueger

I think that part goes active tomorrow when the video airs for the "normal" folk.

Jim Williams

How do we patrons get the free plans? I went to the store, just as I did for your Lathe book, and it wants me to pay for them - I did for the book, but was that supposed to be free as well for patrons?

Howard Tuckey

I konw, my friend! Belive me! I know! lol

Eduardo

Zero flute countersinks are much nicer and really cheap on ebay. Work well for metal as well as wood

Matthew Leigh

Thanks! Getting the timing right was very difficult. I have a video clip of me saying "son-of-a-bitch" like 20 times.

Rex Krueger

I'm going to tell my wife someone called me "courteous and professional". She'll die laughing.

Rex Krueger

Another great video Rex. I especially like the end bit. People like what they will regardless of what we’re talking about and a lot of immature adults can’t get past their own hang ups. You deal with that in a courteous, professional manner. Keep it up.

David

Dude! I totally dig that edit at 1:17. You knocked it out of the park with this one as usual! Keep up the excellent work my man!

Robert Quinn

Oh, we lost a little footage there, so my editor spliced in some later footage and slowed it down to make it look different. We needed a creative solution. Good eye though! I appreciate you always looking out for quality of my work!

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

Great video! Around 3:37 I think the audio is out of sync.

LiraNuna

I just love it...

Frans van Ballegooijen

I'm glad to be making content that you find valuable.

Rex Krueger

I did see that one! Pask is the man!

Rex Krueger

Great idea to use that jack. Videos like this are why I support your work.

WhatMeWorry

I've seen those scaffolding levelers used on a few vises. I think Pask Makes even used one as a tap to build a wooden thread die. Really cool concept and video if you haven't seen it.

Brian King

I'd love to see it when it's done!

Rex Krueger

John's build was totally an inspiration!

Rex Krueger

That's pretty clever. John Heiz made a bench top vice with the same jack screw. https://ibuildit.ca/projects/wooden-vise/

Jessica McIntosh

Going to use some of the tips you mentioned to tune the vice, on the moxon vice I'm building on my work bench.

Scott Pratt

Yeah! Making really round parts without a lathe is WAY too hard with hand tools.

Rex Krueger

Better leave yourself a full day (maybe a little more). Nothing here is very hard, but it does take longer than you'd think. Please post it if you build it.

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

It was a good choice to keep the parts as octagons.

Eduardo

dlc for the workbench! yey

Kostas Karanatsis

Looks awesome. I can't wait til i get a weekend free to get on top of this and some other builds.

Alex Southwell

The vice looks and works great. Great video.
