Early Access Video: Making a Viking Shield

Comments

Early in my YouTube career, I got a message from a hearing-impaired fellow who told me that music makes narration impossible to hear for the hearing-impaired. He asked me to never add music. I'm disabled myself, so it seemed like an easy thing to do. I want EVERYONE to have access to my work.

Rex Krueger

I already posted a couple of things I'd like to see in this series, but I was just re-watching it, and one thing popped out at me - there's no background music! And for that, I THANK YOU! Way too many of the other videos and series contain "appropriate" LOUD, IRRITATING background noise that overrides any useful dialog. (If indeed that dialog is useful) A couple of the main reasons I'm attracted by your work here is (1) that your dialog is crisp, insightful, humorous, and to the point, and (2) there's no screeching noise (music?) to override it. You can't begin to know how much I appreciate that! Please keep up the good work!

Best video yet! Your moment of turning on the lathe was very familiar to me :) As I have had a few of those recently my self.

Aaron Sprague

I saw some pictures of crossbows from that era and they looked pretty good and not too complicated. They also had a minimum of metal work so I thought that might be interesting. Any era would be fascinating, actually

Jeff Griest

Something like a long bow or crossbow would be cool, though I heard they can be tricky with all the forces involved with the string.

KosmicValkyrie

I could probably do that. What makes that time frame special? Why that era specifically?

Rex Krueger

A nice note about the wood used - and why - but as somebody who has been studying the Viking Age as a hobby for the last few years, I have to point out to your Patreons that the actual construction couldn't be more different :) Most of the shields found are not thicker than a half inch, with the edges planed down to a quarter inch or so. That's how they'd trap a blade, by being thin enough at the edge to allow the blade to bite. The most clever part is that shields were usually faced with leather or cloth, and painted, so that only the wielder knew for sure which way the grain was running (as the grip was mounted perpendicular to the grain).

Chris Weigt

How about an English crossbow from around the 14th-15th century time frame?

Jeff Griest

And thank you!

Rex Krueger

Funny you should say that. I just finished forging a little bearded hatchet from a railroad spike. But yes, a big bearded axe would be a lot of fun.

Rex Krueger

It would be nice to see you make a Viking beard axe to go with the shield. :D

Simon Kærvang Hansen

Great! I love the covering the camera with your hand edit. Clever.! Also, the music is boss! Thank you!

Alex Larson

I might really do a gun replica.

Rex Krueger

I've been looking at Maori weapons. Some of them are bad-ass!

Rex Krueger

That's a good idea!

Rex Krueger

Great project, but if you really want a challenge... How 'bout a Howitser...

Frans van Ballegooijen

Entertaining video! Look up the Maori taiaha, that's a historical hardwood weapon

Matthew Leigh

Love the footage during the turning of the wood dust spinning off the shield. The shield looks awesome. You should make a Gladius next.
