Early Access Video: Make you own marking gauge for FREE

Friends:

Do you have a good marking gauge? Do you need one?

Good news: I've designed an built a simple and very effective marking gauge that can be made from wood scraps and a finishing nail. It's a quick and easy project and the final gauge works as well as my fancy rosewood gauge.

When you think about it, all the thing does is scratch a straight line into a piece of wood. How much do we really need exotic woods and brass wear-plates?

This is part of the Woodwork for Humans series and can be done with very basic tools in a few hours.

My apologies if you've left a comment or joined the Patreon family in the last few days. My wife and daughter are away for a trip and the empty house has me a bit off my game. I'll respond to all comments and send out the welcomes just as soon as my home life gets back to normal.

Hope you're having a great weekend!

It took long enough, but I finally got around to making one. https://bill.smithem.com/made-a-marking-gauge/

Bill Smithem

Yes. You would want the stock to be rectangular to register against the side of the stock. And the whole thing would need to be bigger. You could still use a pin for the marker, but I'd use a blade. Hope you post it if you make it!

Rex Krueger

Rex, are there any modifications you think would be necessary to make a panel gauge instead of a marking gauge?

Stephen Cannon

Hey Rex I just discovered the Six Plank Chest. I am sure you have seen them. Might be a good WWFH project.

Peter A Merritt

Totally! The sound just isn't out of sync when i watch.

Rex Krueger

That sounds great. Maybe a "poor man's plow (plough?) plane as well?

Mark L

You know, just like in old kung fu movies where the lips and the words didn't match.

Jim Williams

Um....no? (Confused)

Rex Krueger

Weren't you practicing your Kung Fu movie voice then?

Jim Williams

So if you make a rabbet plane will it also be a shoulder plane? Are the two even interchangeable? I am trying to make a shoulder plane and I almost succeeded. I need to work on the wedge some more.

Jim Williams

I agree, Rabbet plane or a Hand router plane

Aaron Sprague

Mark, I'm right there with you! I think we need a rabbet plane before we get to more complex projects. The rabbet is an easy and useful joint. We almost have a kit for more complex builds.

Rex Krueger

That's EXACTLY what i used for the prototype. Worked great!

Rex Krueger

I'd also love to see some Woodworking for Humans (WfH?) furniture pieces--nightstand, end table, cedar chest--anything you feel would be doable using the WfH tool kit.

Mark L

Hey Rex! Having just bought a marking gauge that's just sort of OK, I was glad to see this video. I'm also glad to see that you've already decided to add a vise.

Mark L

BTW: For the larger dowel one could always use a broomstick. Those are usually made of hardwood (not always but a lot of them are). They are perfectly round, slide easily and it saves you the time of having to round over a piece of square stock...

Frans van Ballegooijen

Well, I just love it...

Frans van Ballegooijen

No, that idea has been around for a little while. My contribution was to make the beam out of a dowel with a flat planed on one side. That allows the main mortise to just be a simple hole but still keeps the beam steady.

Rex Krueger

Hmm, that vise sounds interesting. By the way, that vastening technique with a dowel is just brilliant. Your idea?

Frans van Ballegooijen

Perhaps small boxes?

Rex Krueger

Projects that can be given as gifts are always popular

Matthew Leigh

All good ideas. Thanks for the feedback!

Rex Krueger

Finishing is an especially good idea. I'm pretty simple with my finishes.

Rex Krueger

More projects is a good idea. Send me a pic of the blanket chest you want to make. I'll probably do a few more tools before I tackle something big like that.

Rex Krueger

I used a screw marking gauge for three years now... a traditional wedge system keeps an hand free to work: brillant! i love the idea of a shop made vise...and go on on tools. Some days ago you talked about an hand plane, another hand plane to build. A Jointer plane? I think it would be very useful for hand tool woodworkers

carlo pieracci

re: WWFH next steps: you could follow paul sellers' mold and do the 3 joints - rabbet/dado, mortise and tenon, dovetail, using the tools you've built so far. Make some boxes! (also, there's finishing, which is a curriculum unto itself, and i'd love to see how you'd teach it)

Josh Freedman-Wand

Personally I like a project mixed in with the shop made tools. After all why make all these tools if you don’t make a project. While it may be early my goal is a simple blanket chest. The low bench is great and I have not needed a vise yet.

Peter A Merritt

Keep a lookout for old furniture. Oh, and I used softwood for one of these. It seems fine. Give it a shot with what you have. Good practice!

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

I'll get right on it!

Rex Krueger

Nice! May try to build one of these myself, but I the scrap I have at the moment is pine or engineered wood. Will have to keep trawling craigslist until I catch a bucket of scrap hardwood!

Extralife

Your take on a vice would be epic!

Jim Williams

That's really clever! 😀

Jessica McIntosh

I'll get on the vise for sure! When I watch, the audio and video look fine. We'll see if anyone else chimes in on this, but I always appreciate Patrons helping me catch quality issues.

Rex Krueger

David, holdfasts aren't generally used with the crochet. the board should naturally want to stay parallel to the bench. You might need to fiddle with the crochet geometry a bit. You can send me pic if you want.

Rex Krueger

Interesting video and nice build. A vice would be a great addition; can't wait to see what low tech solution you come up with for that. A technical issue I noticed with the video; the audio was clearly not in sync with the video. At one point I noticed your mouth movements were not quite in sync with what you were saying, and once I saw that I couldn't unsee it for the rest of the video. I hadn't noticed this in any previous video so perhaps you did something differently for this one.

Steve Crane

Thanks again for another great video Rex. I love learning these interesting methods of holding things in place. How did you come about this idea for the dowel pin? And since you Mentioned a vice it seems like that’s the natural way to go. An issue I’ve been having is I don’t have a holdfast for using with my crochet and peg hole board. Any ideas how to rectify the issue without a holdfast? The issue is the crochet makes the loose end of the board want to slide off the peg due to the pressure exerted in the crochet. Thanks again Rex

David

A direct response. I love it.

Rex Krueger

Put a vise on the bench and make more tools.
