Farewell, my faithful servant.

Friends:

It's a big day over here. I'm officially de-commissioning my old Cannon Vixia camcorder. It didn't break (which is a miracle) but I did get a new and much better camera (the Panasonic HC-770) and so I'm putting the old girl out to pasture.

You might be surprised that I'm a little emotional about the whole thing. This camera isn't very good. It takes grainy footage and has big problems with color and light. But this camera has been good TO ME. This was the camera that I started my channel on. The first time you saw my big, bald head, I was looking into this camera.

What this camera did have was price. It was the cheapest full-HD camera when I bought it and this thing allowed me to get my channel off the ground. Without this little, flimsy camcorder, I would not be typing these words.

I have not been good to this camera. The battery is cracked, the lens cover no longer functions, the lens is a mess, and the charging cable has to be taped in place at the end of the day because the power port is so worn out. I guarantee that the people at Cannon did not expect their little home-movie machine to get such rough service. If it were a person, we'd give it a Purple Heart.

But we all must change and grow and so this channel is moving on to something with MUCH better resolution and more professional features. In my next video, you will be treated to some DRASTICALLY better visuals (and you deserve it, because my Patrons basically paid for the upgrade).

So, I'm moving on, but when I even look at the picture I just took of the old Cannon camcorder, I get a tiny bit choked-up.

I'm not kidding.

I know I'm behind the times, but this one means a lot to me, because my wife and I just bought the Cannon to start our own YouTube channel. I've tried using my phone to record, and it just never worked. I'm just glad to know that the little cannon did so much good work for you, and I am looking forward to another doing the same for us. :)

I feel like there's no way its gonna outlast this little wonder. In fact, I'm so sure I'm going to destroy it, I sprung for the extra insurance.

Can’t wait to see how well the new one holds up!

I'm very glad you approve. I was going to ask your opinion before purchase, but this was the only comparable camera that I could afford anyway. Your insights on things like sensor size were INVALUABLE. Wait till you see today's video. Big improvement.

Steve, The mirrorless micro 4/3 cameras certainly provide somewhat better noise levels because they are somewhat larger sensors mean that your average ing more sensor pixels per HD pixel but at this point with the size of audience that Rex has he doesn't need to upload 4K video that would be silly, and even the least expensive micro 4/3 rigWith comparable capability with the decree of zoom with the quality of glass with the ability to watch the preview monitor from almost any angle and with the degree of tilt and shake control would cost Not less than twice as much as what he paid for this and without careful shopping could very easily be 3 times as much for little or no net benefit to the quality of the channel

Excellent choice after all our discussion of your options and considering budgetary requirements this was a good choosing. The relatively large sensor with backlight on the sensor to be able to reduce noise in dark settings the remote capability of controlling it with a smart phone and smartphone picture in picture which you shouldn't need very often but sometimes it's just cool and handy. I'm happy for you that you found something that will work for now until you can take that next step up in the video world a micro 4/3.

We humans get attached to the strangest things, don't we. I have quite a collection of things, some totally useless, to which I've grown attached. Congrats on the new camera, glad to have helped.

Some very knowledgeable people (right here on Patreon) talked me out of the DSLR. They cost more, are harder to operate, and aren't intended for filming. Modern camcorders are pretty great and they're easy, which lets me keep up production.

If that camera where a person, it should indeed get a purple heart (att the very least). Where the abuser should be arrested and foltered without a trial... :) But seriously, I too find it hard to get rid of old hardware. Specially around the time it gets replaced I almost feel worried as if I'm gonna hurt its feelings... Anyway, congrats with your new camera, looking forward to the new shots...

Frans van Ballegooijen

Yes., very weird, but aren't we all a bit weird? Watching a bald guy talk about wood, and paying him to do so? ;)

Frans van Ballegooijen

I'm surprised to see that your new camera is still a camcorder. I had gained the impression that most channels on YouTube were using DSLR or mirrorless cameras for video these days. But what do I know, I only take still photos.

Steve Crane

Godspeed, little photon-capturer! Fare thee well! (Is it weird that when I get print media from Rex now, that since I've watched so many videos, I "hear" the text in Rex's voice?)

Michael Campbell

Parting is such sweet sorrow, but a new gadget helps you get over it. You'll have to build it a special plexiglass case so you can have it proudly displayed on your wall until the YouTube museum opens up and they ask you for it. ;)

Jason Bailey

Sad but exciting! Looking forward to it 😎
