Early Access Video: Make your own try-squares!

Friends:

I'm really happy to bring you this video on shop-made squares. It exemplifies all the things I try to bring to the table: self-reliance, tool-making, keeping costs down, reusing scraps, and above all, top-shelf craftsmanship with minimal tools.

This video is a bit longer than usual, but it's also packed with details and examples. I also put extra attention into polishing this one up. I labored over the color-correction, brightness adjustments, and focused on extra-smooth transitions.

I'm always trying to up my game in film-making and I'm always eager to hear what you think.

Have a great Saturday!

The video now says Premieres in 7 hours. Is this normal and I just haven't seen it before?

Alex Southwell

Oh yeah, this looks great, and it's something I need right now, can't wait to try it out with some of my leftover stinky angelim pedra scrap and some maple.

Brandon Daggerhart

That's the goal: giving you WAY more information than you need (or maybe even want!)

Rex Krueger

i bought one stanley combination square and it's a small one, a was looking to buy one larger. Now i have more instructions than i need to make one, thanks Rex :)

Oh, it's no struggle for me. I actually like working at night. But that's 'cause of the nature of my job I guess.

Frans van Ballegooijen

Night shift here too Frans. I know the struggle. Thank goodness the hand tools are so much quieter!

Nic Beurskens

I'll pist some pics here when I'm finished...

Frans van Ballegooijen

And brass is SO easy to work with. Very forgiving.

Rex Krueger

Very glad you found it understandable. I was afraid it was too long.

Rex Krueger

I'm sure you'll do great. This is exactly the kind of job you can sneak in here and there. All little steps. Hope I get to see yours!

Rex Krueger

Great video Rex. Can't wait to get started. Have to be patient though. Working the nightshift at the moment. As soon as I've got a couple of days off I'll look in to making one...

Frans van Ballegooijen

Thanks for another great video Rex. The square look great! It looks like a pretty straight forward operation now that you’ve made it clear.

David

This is great timing. I just bought a piece of maple this morning to pair with some scrap walnut specifically to make one of these. I hadn't thought of using brass for the pins. Brass and walnut is a great look.
