Sneak Peak: One-Board Tool Tote

Friends:

I just realized that I haven't been doing these sneak peaks in a while. You're the ones making this content possible, so you should get a look ahead.

This week, I'm finally going to make a PROJECT with the $30 bench. Since I'm having trouble keeping track of all my Woodwork for Humans tools, I need a tote. Seems like a perfect first project.

So, after an hour or so with SketchUp. This:

The design is optimized for sturdiness, ease of construction, and efficiency with materials. We'll be able to make it from a single 1x8 board of pine from Home Depot. It will have no hardware, just some simple joinery and glue. Total cost $10.

I've also gone for something that looks at least a little bit cool. I've got a touch of Japanese inspiration here and some nice curves to make it easy on the eyes and the hands.

I've got it all planned out.

Strange how exciting a little project like this can be.

I was just looking at router planes today and trying to justify to myself spending $40 to $60 on one, so I was really happy to see the poor man's version in your video! Thank you for everything you've been doing and please continue to do it

I really need to do a video on that thing. It's pretty common, but I've made some improvements to mine. I'll try to fit it into the schedule!

Hi Rex, I'm looking forward to being a Patreon. Thanks for the videos! You know what got me to sign up? You showed a router planing jig... WHY DON'T I HAVE ONE OF THESE?? It's genius. If you could show a few more pictures so I can build one that'd be awesome.

It does really evoke history and tradition, doesn't it? It's also the easiest solution to "where the hell do I put all this crap?"

Fantasitic! Video will be up this weekend!

Good decisions!

I like the idea of "one board" projects. I've bee thinking about building a version of Jeremy Broun's toolbox, and I bet it could be adapted to a one-board version. I also like this tote quite a lot ... decisions.

Looks fun! I actually just finished with my workbench based on your plans (picked up the ingenious mechanics book as well) and have been looking forward to using in for a project.

This is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of an old timer doing any woodworking. Packing a tote loaded down with old tools that if they could talk would have enough stories to fill a Library.

Josh Miller

Amazing how the projects pile up, isn't it?

Rex Krueger

I'm trying to keep it easy for beginners. Glad you like it!

I just love the symplicity of this project. Keep up the good work...

Frans van Ballegooijen

I've been wanting to make something like this (once I clear the shed enough to build my workbench)!
