Early Access Video: No Vise? No Problem.

Friends:

The $30 bench is done and it's AMAZING. With this humble pile of 2x4s and a couple of dowels and wedges, you can hold any piece of work imaginable, and all without a traditional, screw-operated vise. Honestly, using this bench is a revelation. You do all the stuff you did before, but in a totally different way.

This bench has been the start of something great, and it's certainly kicked up a stir on the Internet, so let's keep it going.

As always, there's more where this came from.

Hope your Saturday is great!

Early Access Video: No Vise? No Problem.

No, they're all pretty good on the low bench. Holdfasts for sure.

Rex Krueger

So looking over the other videos, it looks like most of them should work, which is to say I didn't see any that aren't in the "hold tight" videos for both benches. I mean, the holdfast isn't mentioned in the video for the $30 bench, but I don't see why it couldn't be used.

Kind of watching these out of order (first video of yours I saw was the English Joiners bench) so maybe this has already been covered, but are there any of the non-clamp "clamps" used on that one that specifically /wouldn't/ work on the $30 bench?

James Anthony

I'm a huge fan of paul's work, but I haven't gotten around to the plywood bench yet. Some evening when I have more than 10 minutes of free time, I will watch it with great interest. I'm glad someone else likes Paul as much as I do!

Rex Krueger

I assume you've watched Paul Sellers amazing all plywood workbench? Intentional gaps for mortises, etc. Almost no screws, 4 in thich top for holdfasts etc. Astonishing. But... Not as cool as the $30 bench with non moving vice like thingies.

James Boatright

You know, that actually might be fun. I'll put Troy in the background of one shot deliberately and whoever finds him first gets a heart. Could be fun!

Rex Krueger

Let the Troy hunt begin. Troy with beard. Troy with hat. Troy hiding behind wrenches. Troy on the floor under the bench...

James Boatright

They won't be cheap...

Rex Krueger

Nah we want plans for that one.

You guys have very sharp eyes. I'm going to have to do a better job hiding the parts of my moonshine still.

Rex Krueger

I noticed him too, I like him. I hope it shows up in the back of more shots

Alex Southwell

Troy is cool, you should make him appear secretly in some videos with some random accessories. It can be a nice scavenger hunt every video!

LiraNuna

I call him "Troy". He helps me focus my camera. I'm always embarrassed when he ends up in the shot by accident.

What's the story behind the plate with the face on it? This one: https://i.imgur.com/70F7lhS.png

Another quality post. And viewing this I start wondering... What the %$!@$ was I thinking, spending all that cash on my portable workbench (workmate) that costs more than this workbench and actually does less than what you're showing here...
