Early Access Video: Pro Blacksmith; Micro Shop

Friends:

This week we take little detour and visit with Tim Cunningham, a professional blacksmith and smithing teacher in Cleveland. Tim runs a thriving business with the most minimal gear imaginable and I just had to get a tour of his modest shop and get the low-down on how he makes a living with a forge, an anvil, a hammer, and not much else.

I hope you all enjoy this quick dip into the world of smithing. Late in the video, I mention an exclusive video just for Patrons and that one will be up just as soon as I get 5 extra minutes to edit it.

Next week: the final installment in the $30 bench.

Lots to look forward to around here!

Hope all is well.

You might be surprised how little noise it makes. The steel you're hitting is soft from being heated and doesn't make much sound. The anvil can ring a lot, but you can fix that with chain, a big magnet, or by buying a Fisher anvil. These have a cast-iron body and don't ring hardly at all. Back in the day, they were called "city anvils".

I agree! I've been smithing for a while now and even I didn't realize how simple it could really be! Tim gave me a real education.

I love the video. Nice to see prove that you don't need a lot to create something nice... I often think most people make things way too difficult for themselves and for others...

Frans van Ballegooijen

Great video, I'd love to see more blacksmithing material and I'll have to check this guy out. One question I keep wanting to ask hobby blacksmiths like yourself is how do you deal with the sound? I would be worried about repeated hammer blows would get very irritating to any nearby neighbors. Have you had any issues with this where you live?

KosmicValkyrie

Cool video Rex. I'll check him out on You Tube.

Drew Nelson

Yeah. If I do more interview videos, I'll need to work on the sound. No doubt.

Rex Krueger

Cool video man. I think alot of guys that want to get into blacksmithing would really benefit from Tims knowledge and know-how with such a minimal shop list. One criticism is volume differences while interviewing/ talking away from the camera. You should look in to a lav mic and a xy audio recorder like the H1.
