Flattening the $30 Workbench

Friends:

We built it. Now we need to flatten it.

The $30 workbench is great, but it needs to be flat to be really useful. Let's make that happen. Grab one plane (even a cheap one like the Stanley 12-404) and let's get it done.

Happy Saturday!

Flattening the $30 Workbench

Comments

Good point. Thanks...

Frans van Ballegooijen

Good question! The answer is, that would be a ton of effort that might not pay off. I'm already squaring the sides, so you're talking about making a dozen 2x4s square on all sides and the being SUPER careful to keep everything perfectly aligned during glue-up. If just one or two boards shift, then all the pre-flattening was for nothing and you're back to flattening the whole top. With construction lumber, you're better off getting good glue-joints and then only having to flatten one side. The underside of my bench is quite uneven, but who cares? I'm not going to use it.

Rex Krueger

Ehm, just wondering... Wouldn't it have been easier to flatten the 2x4's before assembling the workbench? That way you would only have to align the top during assembly andgive it a light sanding afterwards ti smoothen it out...

Frans van Ballegooijen

Oh, I'd love to see that as well. :)

Wow, Go for it man... The biggest stars started this way. Who knows, maybe later I can say: "That big star Reg Krueger? Yeah, I know him. I told him to get in to comedy!" ;)

Frans van Ballegooijen

Thanks, Drew!

I think I'll finish it up next week. This week, I'm doing some blacksmithing stuff. I promised a friend I'd help him make his first video. Then, I think we'll make some tools, like a spoke-shave and marking guage.

Rex Krueger

And I'll be very grateful for those subscribers. Thanks!

Rex Krueger

Frans, thanks SO much for the compliment! I do try to make things easy to understand. It's hilarious that you mention standup. Being a comedian is actually the first thing I ever wanted to do as a kid and JUST LAST NIGHT, I was telling my wife that I kind of feel like trying standup. Weird.

Rex Krueger

Great video. Did you use your floodlights in this video? It sure looks like it. Also you're really good in breaking everithing down into normal language without an excess of technical terms. That can really draw in beginning woodworkers (or those who want to start woodworking but are afraid to do so). But have you ever thought about becoming a standup comedian? I love how you put in your humor and some sarcasm into your videos... Keep it up.

Frans van Ballegooijen

I dont know man, a wood working for madsochists series might done pretty well. Had a good chuckle over that line. Haha

Josh Miller

Just posted your first video on this bench on my Facebook. Hopefully, that will draw in all my fans. I'd expect a jump of 2 or 3 subscriptions.

Jim Williams

Nice video. I can hardly wait for more videos about the bench.

Sebastian

Nice job Rex!
