Early Access Video: What is a Parting Tool

Friends:

My latest video is a thorough discussion of the Parting Tool and it is part of a longer series where I'll explore the most common lathe tools in detail.

Now I know what you're thinking: "Wait a minute, Rex. Isn't this just more shameless book promotion? Haven't we, your loyal Patrons, suffered through enough of this already?"

And the answer is: yes on both counts. This is ABSOLUTELY shameless promotion of the book, but that's because the book represents some of the most stable passive income I've yet generated. This channel is doing pretty well (mainly thinks to you) but I'm still teetering on the edge of financial viability. Lasting properties like the book represent my surest path to growth, so I have to keep hitting them as hard as I can. My hope is that these videos will be optimized for SEO and have a long life on the YouTube. I should be able to put these out and then sit back a bit while new turners find these videos, find the book, and buy it.

So there will be more of this content, but I'm going to intersperse it with totally unrelated content that's interesting for the non-turner. If you liked my 3 Tool Bench, then I'm going to do more like that. I also plan to get back to writing some exclusive posts for Patreon. So, look forward to some more exclusive sneak-peaks and Process Notes articles.

And thanks for your patience. You are appreciated.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

You know, I never considered that. It's not difficult, but I could probably add something. Thanks for the idea!

Todd: I really think turning is an essential part of the woodworker's art. It's great to do bowls and spindles, but I get even more practical use from my lathe. I make tool handles, drawer pulls, and basic knobs and wheels for old tools if I buy them and they're missing. I've even turned pulleys for big machines like my DIY lathe. Try a cheap mini lathe or take a class. You might love it!

Side note for non turning related content: I'd love to see your tips for stripping and refinishing furniture. Most of the articles and videos out there are fluffy garbage bordering on advertisements. I think this topic calls for your concise, realistic and broad reaching approach.

I wasn't originally considering wood turning when I found your channel months ago, but all this good content is really making me consider it. I'll definitely start by getting your book.

Man, you hit the nail on the head! I did compile a lot of footage. I shot four complete videos in 2 days. It was very tiring, but now I have some content in the bank. I did spend more of that time with my family and I'm starting on the next book, so it was a good move. Thanks for understanding and encouraging me!

It would only be a shameless plug if the video had no value. I’ve been turning for 18 years and have forgotten some of the things you mention, so it’s a good refresher course. If we didn’t like your content, we wouldn’t be patrons. Also, I recognize that it was likely very easy for you to spend a few hours working at the lathe to get a lot of footage for several videos, thus freeing up your time for a bigger project or other important things...like family time. Enjoyed the video as always.
