I'm Sticking with Patreon for now

Many of you have been in touch since I posted about the whole Patreon debacle. Rather than write a bunch of little individual replies, I'll just thank you all for your totally overwhelming support and trust.

I've lost a few Patrons (and no hard feelings) but most of you are committed to sticking around and supporting what I do. This means the world to me.

Because of what I do, I'm pretty safe from Patreon ever deciding to cancel my account, but I still care about their policies and conduct. The Sargon of Akkad case is a bit slippery because you have a fairly unpleasant person using language and rhetoric that most of us would find totally unacceptable. It's hard to stick up for someone like that. On the other hand, he didn't do anything that would invalidate his right to free expression.

I know that Patreon is a company and not the government, but I prefer for most entities to behave as if they had a duty to allow free speech to any degree, so long as it doesn't incite violence or fall into a few other very narrow cases. Other than that, I want people to be able to say what they believe without fear that their livelihood will be impacted.

Most of you seem to feel similarly. You all demonstrate admirable support for free expression, but you also feel that I should keep doing what I do. So, I'll keep at it.

As for Patreon...we'll see.
