Early-Access Video: Real Lathe Pt 5: Tail-stock

Friends:

I'll be honest: I never appreciated how complex the lathe tail-stock is until I went to build one. This often-forgotten piece of the lathe has to do a LOT of jobs and building one out of (mostly) wood is a tall order.

It was a scramble to get this done on schedule, but I got it done.

Next time, I'll actually TURN something.

Just imagine.

Early-Access Video: Real Lathe Pt 5: Tail-stock

Comments

George: That's a SUPER nice thing to say and I appreciate it a lot. I'm really putting my all into this project and I think it will all come together in the next video. Thanks again!

you know, I never thought a wooden tail stock can accomplish all these features. I tried to build at least 2 and they all came out pretty sub-standard (threaded rod, unstable, not aligned, no easy attachments etc.). I'm blown away by your solutions to these problems that I really busted my head over (and I'm sure plenty of others did too).. this, sir, is the next-generation of DIY lathe projects. Wandell and Heisz can learn a trick or two from this one.. Now I'm so hyped for the face plate/headstock attachments! really glad I'm a supported. thanks, Rex!

I admit, I'm gloating on your behalf. I was frustrated with the limitations of existing homemade lathe designs, too. That's what started me on this project. Building a "real" lathe just didn't seem like that big of a deal. Of course, it has been kind of big deal, but worth every minute. Let me know what your friend says!

I showed this project to a friend of mine when you started it, and he was quite dismissive. Said that like all homemade lathes it wasn't very useful because without a Morse taper it couldn't take standard accessories. I've been counting down the days until this one released publicly so I could send it to him. I seriously considered just sending him the patron link (but I didn't). Ultimate satisfaction - "Oh look, what's that? Bourse paper? Hoarse vaper? Something like that. You'll just have to watch it and see."

Thanks very much! I did try hard to make a full-featured unit with this one. I think it's going to perform well.

That was a great video. I really thought you were going to end up with a tail stock similar to what the shopbuilt home made wooden lathe used. This is so much better and I did not correctly predicted all how you were going to use the lever to move the pipe in the tail stock. I'll stop short of "brilliant" but damn, good job Rex!
