Sneak Peak: The Dark Star

You probably noticed that I didn't get a video up yesterday. The end of the day just came too fast and before I knew it, it was time to be a dad and work had to wait. The next video in the Real Lathe series is 90% done, but a little work remains.
Anyway, I will have TWO videos for you next week. The first will be the tool rest for the Real Lathe and the second will be this:
I call it the Dark Star.
My wife is on the Board of Directors for an acupuncture school in Florida and they're having a charity auction this week. They asked if I would make them a piece. I asked my wife what I should make and she told me that the Ying-Yang symbol is huge in Chinese Medicine, so I designed a piece that would incorporate it.
The background is black walnut. I band-sawed out the star shape and then filled it with tinted resin. The center yin-yang is different pieces of copper pipe and I hand-formed that central squiggle thing. Then I filled it with black and clear resin and let it cure.
Then I mounted the whole thing on the lathe and turned it, sanded, oiled, and polished it. I'm going to do the video with music and no talking. Should be interesting.
