The Real Lathe Pt. 2: Make your own pulleys

Friends:

I'm a day later than usual because nothing this week went according to plan. Tools went missing, materials broke, and the best laid plans of mice and men came to nothing.

Anyway, I made some pulleys and I made them from plywood. It ended up awesome.

You can make your own pulleys, even for real machines like a lathe with just a power source and some bench-chisels. It's free and it isn't even that hard.

I did a double-pulley on a motor shaft and a 4-step cone pulley for the spindle of the Real Lathe.

I'm really happy with the end product, but as always, I leave it to you to tell me what you think. Comments and criticism are always welcome.

Enjoy the weekend!

The Real Lathe Pt. 2: Make your own pulleys

Comments

It's on the list. Still need a motor for my lathe though.

You should! I've only been turning for a bit over 2 years and I've sold work, made MANY gifts, and I have a turning video with over 300K views on YouTube. It wasn't hard to pick up and I got decent at it pretty fast. Very satisfying.

You make me really want to turn some wood.

Alana 2 hubs. Missed that. Good.

Good points! 1.) The shaft is mild steel, so I can add indexing holes anytime, and I will if I need them. I've thought a bat about doing this already. 2.) There are 2 hubs and the screws are offset from each other 180 degrees. The spindle runs true without vibration (so far) so i think I'll be okay. Thanks for the useful feedback!

So, I'll just make two comments... My experience with set screws without flats or holes for them to index on is poor. Good luck. 2] aren't you introducing an out of balance condition with only 1 set screw on one side? Oh well, if it rattles, I suppose you can drill another hole.
