Early Access Video: Woodturned Yoga Mat Rack

Friends:

You know I've been on a real lathe kick recently. Not only am I in the process of building one from scratch (more on that soon), I'm also thinking about what we make on the lathe.

The mighty lathe is actually the heart of the Industrial Revolution. It makes precision parts and medical instruments possible. But what do woodworkers do with it?

We mostly make wooden bowls.

I love bowls as much as the next turner, but how many of these things do we really need? What do they do besides looking nice? Not much.

I think we can make a lot more, so I'm launching a new series called #beyondbowls (go ahead and follow that tag on Instagtram). I'm going to use my lathe to make wooden hollow forms that are beautiful or useful or both, but I'm going to make fewer bowls, because I just don't need any more and they aren't making me money.

This is my first video in that series. I make a nice rack for yoga mats using some bowl techniques, but the end product is very much NOT a bowl.

I'm excited about this new project and I hope you enjoy it.

As always, I'm eager to hear your thoughts. You all are the heart of my audience and I take your comments very seriously.

Hope all is well.

Brilliant!

Think of it as complementary to YouTube, not a replacement for it Kenny

You could even do it for the curved support at the bottom of the stand, the one you cut as a bandsaw shape this time

I guess I've just yet to see anything on IG that I really found interesting. I'm not so much interested in pretty pictures as I am in learning how to do things

Awesome. And yes, turning something and then cutting it up the way you suggest is something I've thought a log about. BUT, I've never considered decorative feet. Fascinating idea!

Rex Krueger

Interesting. I love IG. It's like my own personal museum entirely made up of stuff I want to see. I love seeing progress from my favorite craftspeople and artists. I get a lot of ideas.

What is it with Instagram and woodworkers now? I started listening to some podcasts and they all talk about instagram. I follow folks on instagram (just followed you) when I think of it but honestly I find Instagram to be a bit boring. Its just a bunch of pictures like someones photo album usually with little context no instructions just looking at pretty (or not so pretty) pictures nothing to actually help learn anything that I've seen yet.

Could you turn a cylindrical profile like a short, fat lamp body and then cut into quarters along the z axis to make decorative feet or supporters? I liked the way you went through your decision making process so methodically, it made the video much easier to follow along with.

I'll give it a shot, although my daughter is much more of a bracelet girl than my wife is.

Rex Krueger

Take a piece of wood, possibly an interesting laminate, go measure your wife's bangle bracelets. Round over a piece at that radius, sand, finish nicely, cut with a paring tool. Done carefully you can get large, normal and child off one piece. Layer laminates are nice, cross hatch or radial laminates are fun. You can cut deep beads in one piece then part off several thin bracelets in one pass. I'll try to find some and post s photo but I think all I have left are solid wood. Cherry probably.

Bracelets? Never even crossed my mind. Interesting...

Back when I had access to a lathe, I made rather a lot of bracelets which I handed to a friend who did farmers markets and craft shows, we split 60 40. As stipe as it is, I also made wheels for pull toys ..
