Announcing Ask Me Anything #1

Friends:

I get a lot of questions and I think it would be fun to answer them in a video. I've made a short clip about all the stuff you can ask me and some things from my past that you might find interesting.

I forgot to mention that I also play 3 instruments (guitar, bass guitar, and lap steel), and I'm never, ever sick at sea.

Go ahead and leave your questions in the comments for this post or message me directly.

I think this will be a lot of fun.

Thanks!

Hi i recently saw your episode on saws and sharpening them. so diamond sharpeners (saw little file ones) can they sharpen disposable saws and or not wear out doing standard saw sharpening.

Hi Rex, been working on a bench made of cotton wood. It is 8ft by 28 in all parts are made just need to put it together. The thing is I bought a nice bench at a sale with a vise and just as big. Would you be interested in all the parts and putting it together in a video.

Ted Foust

Have you ever rejected a "make something" commission for reasons other than time/cost? What's the weirdest one you've accepted?

Hi Rex, after about a year or so of woodworking, I just started to get into hand tools and took a hand plane class where I learned all about sharpening, setting up and using a typical no 4. Your sharpening video have been a great help. Is there any difference (other than bevel angle )when sharpening an iron to be used in a low angle bevel up plane? Thanks! -John

Excellent question!

I am a hobby DIY guy. I have recently become obsessed with hand tool woodworking and I have a really nice setup for it now. I have some power tools that I use to augment my work mainly a chop saw and a band saw. You mentioned once that the table saw is the core of your shop. I ended up giving mine away (job site table saw) because it was just scary and I mainly used it as a table not a table saw. I watch a lot of youtube woodworkers and there seems to be a divide those that focus on the table saw and those that focus on the bandsaw. Is this my imagination? How or why is the table saw the core of your shop? Could it be something to do with hobby vs job? I am interested in your opinion. Cheers!

Yes! I'll include them in the video. rexkrueger at gmail.com

I got this idea from your bowling alley counter top, so it's kinda your fault if it sucks, but maybe you can tell me if I should not do this. My house was built in the 60s, I pulled up a face nailed oak floor (converted a room to a bathroom) and saved the wood - it's in pretty good shape, 5/16, 2 inch wide, solid oak. I want to laminate them to form a vanity top (wall to wall) for my master bath. about 7 feet by 22 inches. I've stacked and staggered them (I have varying lengths of 8 feet down to 6 inches), all I have to do is sand, glue up, rout the top smooth, stain and seal it to within an inch of its life. I will mount it on stud mounted brackets and drill holes for the plumbing. Do you think that stock is thick enough to not warp and twist? Good idea or no?

Do you plan to get your kids involved in making stuff, and if so how/what age etc?

Matthew Leigh

What trends/styles/techniques do you think are overrated?

Matthew Leigh

Having rocked the shaved head for a while, i can tell you that that is not an effortless hairstyle to maintain, and it's a LOT more work than my current situation, my guess is Rex does his own hair, but it's occasionally trickey in the back ;p

James Kison

So, first question....who does your hair?
