Early Access Video: Import Tool Madness #4

Friends:

It's been a heck of a month around here. We've already welcomed SEVENTEEN new Patrons to the channel and it's only the 21st!

Now that I'm doing content full time, I can make more of it, so I'm ready with the next installment of Import Tool Madness.

When I saw this plane for just $25, I had to have it. Not like I need another plane, but the idea of buying a functional jack plane for so little money? Amazing.

This is a 14-inch, double iron plane with a hardwood body and a BRASS insert in the mouth. Because of its traditional Chinese design, it can be pushed or pulled.

Too good to be true?

Watch the video to find out.

Hope everyone is having a good and safe week!

So new here, I was inspired by this video, and found this plane with 6 others at AliExpress for 120 dollars, and well Christmas is coming up and my boys dont know it yet but they bought me hand planes.

I bought one of these planes, though was more like $33 with free shipping. After a brief tuneup, it works great. I really like using it. I did take that handle out, though.

May I ask, where did you get yours? What did you pay and is there a brand name on it? I'm very interested in these planes.

i already own one og these planes, it's made of ebony and it's 45 cm/18" long. but blade is thinner than your balde is. i have to flatten the sole, but i think it will be a good jack

That's the problem exactly. No one loved American-made stuff more than I do, but current American tools are just SO expensive. As to things that are available via retail, I'll keep my eyes open. I know it's hard to buy something without touching it first.

I can totally do a video on evaluating flea-market finds and that might make a great video. Thanks for the idea! When you say tools we might see here domestically, do you mean at retail outlets? I'm confused.

Rex Krueger

Seems to be a wide-spread problem, but I'm hot on the trail of alternatives. Seems like this one is a good start.

Yep I'm one of those who can find old planes anywhere but eBay - I did buy a couple and am working on getting them into shape though. Whenever I try going to a sale of some kind (garage/swap meet/estate, etc.) not only are there no planes (and few if any other woodworking hand tools) I generally spend more than I would save anyway with my wife buying furniture, knicknacks, plants, etc.
