Early Access Video: Make a guitar body

And now for something completely different.

I don't talk about this a lot, but I'm a pretty serious musician. That little guitar riff in my intro? That's me. I also play bass guitar and lap-steel and I studied classical voice for about 2 years.

I started modifying and restoring guitars when I was in high-school and working with instruments was my entry point into woodwork.

I've wanted to do some of that stuff on this channel for a long time, but I wasn't sure how to get going. Then, my old friend Alex mentioned that he needed a new body for one of his guitars.

Guitar bodies are easy to make (if you already know some woodworking) and Alex was coming for a visit this last weekend, so it all just came together.

Alex also appears in the video, which was a lot of fun. He's been my most consistent supporter since this channel started. He was my first subscriber AND my first Patron. He believed in this channel when no one else did.

That's a real friend.

Anyway, hope you all enjoy the video. I'm really looking forward to your thoughts on this one.

Early Access Video: Make a guitar body

I've done some with ash and some with poplar, but this is the first time I've built a body from scratch. I was shocked at how easy it was. If you're going to bother to do it, print out the blue-print and use that. It has all the correct screw locations, etc. You'll get a better project for sure.

Ok, so i may really have to build a new body for my Fender Telecaster. I could probably just trace the guitar and get it close enough for my liking. Don't worry it's just a cheap Korean squire, so there's nothing sacred about it, but it plays so beautifully and sounds great. Maybe i should start with a new body for my Fernandez bass, yet more projects for my copious free time. I should get to this in about 3 years, but dang that's inspiring work there. What wood did you use for your other guitar builds?

James Kison

Thank you very much!

Rex Krueger

Hilariously, I did a CBG and filmed it for my first video, but I got way too ambitious and never finished either the guitar or the video. This was like 18 months ago. Sigh.

Rex Krueger

Did I mention that is a beautiful body?

James Kison

I made a cigar box guitar for my dad, it was fun, but i haven't gotten around to finishing one for me yet, but that's ok, I have my fender telecaster and Gibson explorer to play in the meantime. Cigar box guitars are easy projects because they often only have three strings so you don't have to worry about reinforcing the neck with a truss rod.

James Kison

Sound box, f holes, braces, spruce top...

James Boatright

Of course not!

Rex Krueger

That really helps. Thanks!

Rex Krueger

You never know, if this video goes well, I might make the whole thing. We'll just have to see...;

Rex Krueger

Aw shucks. I started making dulcimer in my dorm room on college. I thought you were actually going to make a guitar... Cutting feet slots by hand with a razor saw is such fun... oh, and getting the fretboard arch just perfect... such fun. Plus, I can't play guitar. ;-]

James Boatright

I really liked you "hosting" Alex and sharing the build between the two of you. I also liked the project itself: something you don't usually see on woodworking channels and lends itself to other hobbies (like music). To be honest, after 3 years of watching woodworking channels, I'm a little tired of furniture builds, jigs, and workshop projects (but only a little :) ) . I don't mean to say I don't like them, it's just that they need to be very special to get my attention.. Anyway, I really enjoy your presentation style, it's something very unique. Whatever you decide to post - I'll like it for sure :)

Or maybe I just need to have one guest more often...

Rex Krueger

Fantastic! When you say, "more vids like this", what specifically do you mean? I did so many new things here I am not sure that exactly you liked.

Rex Krueger

I'm so glad you think so!

Rex Krueger

Great video! You should have more guests on your channel.

Alex Larson

Will do! All I've done with it so far was to make a small cutting board. It's nice looking stuff. I had an old one blow down in my yard last year and I couldn't stand the thought of burning it.

Jonathan Boatman

Absolutely loved this one, Rex! Please make more vids like this, it's so very refreshing :) Alex is a cool guy and I hope to see more of him/you two in the future! super thumbs up :)

George B

That was very entertaining, a great watch

Whatever you do with that pear, post a pic on the community section. I've never worked with pear and I'm curious.

Rex Krueger

Nice video. I've been thinking about what I should do with some pear wood. This may be a contender.
