Early Access Video: Do You Need a Drill Press?

Friends:

It's a big day for me. I've recently quit client work. I'm installing one of my last jobs tomorrow. I may take a job here or there to make ends meet, but I now consider myself a full-time content producer.

Weeks ago, I asked you what video I should do and you overwhelmingly voted for a video on drill press basics. It's been in the back of my head since then, but I just couldn't squeeze it in.

Now I have more time for the good stuff, so here it is.

Part 1 in a 4 part series.

Hope you like it!

Early Access Video: Do You Need a Drill Press?

Amen to that! I've brought back some tools that might have gone to the scrap-pile. But if you're broke and you need tools, then that's the game.

I know someone that owns a pawn shop and he normally gives pretty good deals to me. I had to do a little work to it as I mentioned but nothing major. Even though it's a 13 inch harbor freight drill press, I can't see any run out or wobble what so ever and it has enough power that I've never bogged it down on anything and I have drilled through 1/4 steel with it as well as large holes in hardwood. I have no problem buying tools that needs a little work as long as the price it right!

I'd love to hear more about your drill press. Clearly, people who see my drill press videos and going to want recommendations on a press they can buy, but I don't know what to tell them. I like mine, but it's a weird asian model that I found at a Habitat for Humanity Restore. I need the intel on cheap but good presses.

I lucked out and bought a harbor freight stand up model that was never used for $40. Just missing the belts and the crank that moves the table up and down was broke off. Before then, I had an old rusty table top kind. Now I have it, I use it on at least 50% of the stuff I do.

Oh man! The floor models are the best and most sought after. Score! And I do plan on moving right along with this series. Don't worry too much about safety. Hard to get hurt with a drill press (not impossible, but hard).

Rex Krueger

wow, this is right on time!!! I just bought an old floor drill press that needs rehabbing. Never used one before. Hopefully you'll get all these published before I put an eye out.

So I assume you have some hand tools already? That's how I would start if I were doing it all over. And yes, a drill press is the best starter power tool. Does a lot of work and it's hard to hurt yourself on one. (Not impossible; but hard.) Glad you liked it!

Rex Krueger

You won't regret it.

Rex Krueger

It really is!

Congrats on making the leap to being a full-time creator. I'm at the spot in my woodworking where I would like to start acquiring power tools, so this video is perfect timing.
