Sorry to be gone so long. I took my daughter up to Connecticut to visit my parents and I've got client work coming out my ears. (Client work that I don't want to do, by the way).
I'd rather be making videos.
Anyway, I'm really proud of this one. I had to match Spanish Cedar to White Ash and I'm not one to get crazy making my own stains, so I did it all with off-the-shelf Minwax products. It came out well.
I hope this video is instructive to others who find themselves in my position.

I've used it twice. Both for a dark stain on pine for bathroom vanities. It was pretty easy, but the dark color doesn't exactly showcase the grain. I don't have a ton of finish experience though.

I was thinking of 2 things: 1. is it possible to mix the brown+red stains and apply them as a single layer? may give better soak.. 2. did you consider the change of color over time? I'm not familiar with ash, but some wood types change color considerably as they mature/age. Anyway, the lighting and color balance are perfect, and the color match you achieved is superb!
