Early Access Video: Five Minute Chisel Handle

Friends:

I'm still going to do that drill-press video you all voted on, but this week is crazy-busy and I'm taking my daughter on a trip to see my folks next week, so time is short.

In this interest of getting some content out, I did this quick tip on getting a socket chisel handle fitted VERY quickly and easily.

Necessity was the mother of invention on this one. My shop is littered with old socket chisels and I needed to fix five of them up very fast for a class I'm teaching next weekend.

So, I came up with this super-simple jig that will let you mount the handle on the lathe, take it on and off as many times as you like, and get your handle sized in minutes. It's really easy.

I also kept the video short and the talking to a minimum.

Hope you like it! Please do drop me a comment with your thoughts.

Hope your week gets off to a good start!

I think you're right. Thanks for reminding me!

Glad you found it useful, and yes, I'm still figuring out white balance and color correction. I appreciate the feedback!

Jamb chucks are great! I'm pretty sure that's the official woodturner name for your jig.

That's awesome! Can't wait to meet you!

Yep, signed up about 2 weeks ago.

Wait, are you in the actual class? I haven't seen the names yet.

I like it a lot! That jig is pretty neat, saves a lot of time even when you have to go back and forth to test the fit. I don't own a lathe (well, only a self-built one) so I'm no expert. Enjoyed it a lot! btw, I prefer the white balance/lighting at 1:33 over the more yellowy tones in the rest of the video.. I have a couple of handles to make and that is an excellent jig idea - not only for socket chisels, but also for fitting new ferrules on existing handles. Thanks!

Looking forward to the class.
