Exclusive Video: Shattered Plywood River Bowl. Early, rough cut.

Friends:

I'm madly at work on my entry in the Rockler Plywood Challenge. I'm making a plywood bowl that looks like it's been shattered and had the crack filled with blue resin. The contest ends this Thursday at midnight and there's no way I'm going to get the video done in time for early access.

But you guys pay for this content and you get special privileges. So, I've uploaded this rough-cut that brings you up to the minute on where I am. I had originally planned for music on this video, so there's a drum-beat behind it. I think I'm going to do narration instead, so that final video will be a bit different. Look forward to the final video with full voice-over later in the week.

As usual, please let me know your thoughts in the comments. My patrons mean the most to me.

You guys really are part of the process. Not only do you give me good feedback, the money I get from Patrons allows me flexibility to do projects that I'm not getting paid for.

Rex Krueger

Thanks Rex. feels good to be a part of the process and join the ride :)

Jason: Thanks for your thoughts. Yes, this is the rough edit. I know it's not great. You're totally right that the point is just to give a peek into the process. And since I've recently come to love prototyping, shooting more of that stuff would be a great idea. Thanks!

Rex Krueger

Rex, this is a great style for a rough cut/sneak peek. Most of the critiques seem to have missed that point. I also think this style would be great for filming something that youre prototyping to give your patrons a taste of what’s in the pipe...or even something similar to what you’ve done before (so it doesn’t need an in-depth explanation) but you’ve tweaked in some way.

The pump resin was West System. It's a standard resin with boat builders. Very high quality. Very pricey. I have this set left over from a complicated finish I just did, so the client paid for it. And sorry for the tease and the hard cut. All will be explained in the final cut in a few days. Thanks so much for your valuable thoughts!

Oh, no trouble. It's Famowood Bartop Epoxy. It's not the best or the strongest, but it is cheap and can be colored with food coloring. Oh, and it turns.

George: We're right on the same page here. When i said "rough" cut, I meant it. The final will be MUCH tighter, promise. I really do appreciate the feedback about what stays and what goes. I had some hunches, but this helps.

wow, what a refreshing beat! I loved how it starts, makes you bob your head :) you should definitely keep it, at least for the beginning or something.. However, in my opinion (and sorry for the critique) the first 2 or 5 minutes could be squeezed a lot more, I kind of lost the momentum at the "laying out the mold" and then each and every plywood layer.. the chainsaw part is awesome :) and of course all the funny bits like waiting and crossing your fingers. Love those!! I think narration would help too (you've got a good talent for that), but somehow in combination with the cool music. Yeah, I guess it's very hard to do it right, and you've probably already spent a lot of time on this video, so... all in all, excellent concept with cool music :) If you ask me, some combination of shorter clips, with narration and the same music is a winner IMO :)

My google-fun fails to identify the stuff you used to fill with. Searching for "super glass" epoxy gets me go nothing useful.

Fascinating as always Rex thank You. A narration will be useful especially since at this point we have no idea what the is in trouble shape of the bowl is intended to be in so in particular watching you cut what I suppose is the foot of the bowl around the black fixture that you screwed on leaving what I suppose is a pediment or stand of some sort was interesting but just a tease when you cut hard right there. I have no idea if you intend to show a sketch or even a vertical transection outline of the goal shape or if you intend instead to make that a completely surprise to your viewers but at this point the cut off is a terrible tease. A Narration will also be useful because I'll admit to being surprised at your choosing a chainsaw rather then whacking off the corners with your table saw set to 45 or possibly with a band saw either of which is what I was expecting. If you have a chance it would be really nice if you could comment on the to epoxy is that you chose for the project sense my experience is with JB Weld and maybe a 4 oz bottle of loctite and I'm really in no position to know about others but the pump liter cans that you were using were intriguing and the larger resin that you used was completely unknown to me.
