Sneak Peek: Shattered Plywood River Bowl

Friends:

Did you have a good week?

Ever since I got the Monster Display Case out of my life, things have been a lot easier in the shop. I've learned that I'm much better off doing 2-4 little projects each month rather than one huge project for several months.

I get bored.

Now that I'm free of that beast, I'm also on to more content creation. For instance, I've entered in the Rockler Plywood Challenge. It's put on by the fellows at the Modern Maker Podcast (totally worth a listen).

The idea is simple. Make something out of a sheet of plywood and make a video about it. Post it on instagram and tag #rocklerplywoodchallenge. You're allowed to add other components like glue and hardware as necessary, so it's a pretty loose set of rules.

Here's my plan: I've made a box out of particle board with one side made out of clear lexan. Then, I took a bunch of plywood scraps and broke them so they have a ragged, splintery edge. I arranged all the scraps in the box and glued them together.

Now that they're arranged in a way I like, I'm starting to fill the space between the boards with colored resin.

Once the resin pour is complete (and that will take days), I'll knock the box apart and have a solid cube of plywood and resin.

Then, I'm going to mount the whole thing on the lathe and turn a bowl out of it.

I know this sounds a little ridiculous, but the idea is to make a bowl that looks like it's been ripped apart and then had the tear filled with resin. It's my variation on the river table, an idea that was cool the first 100 times we all saw it.

It's an ambitious, possibly stupid idea, and it's already harder than I anticipated, but it should make for one hell of a video.

More to come. Enjoy your weekend!
