Early Access Video: Straighten boards without a jointer

So, after my high-tech miter-plane build, I got a bit burned out. I have orders for custom work piling up and time is so short. But I love making content and I couldn't let too much time go by without a video.

Then, just the other day, I was milling up lumber for some cabinet doors and I realized that I still don't own a jointer.

Even more amazing, I don't really want one. I've got a good and simple technique for straightening board edges without a jointer and it occurred to me that it might make a nice little video. Plenty of other content creators have their own techniques, but these usually involve building a jig or screwing the board down to a hunk of MDF. Well, my technique doesn't require either of those things. It's just a jack plane and a table-saw. I think anyone can use this method to get really perfect edges on their boards.

Hope you like it!

I know how you feel. I have several tools that I "needed" and they just collect dust. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind owning a jointer. Now that I have this technique down, I could really use the added speed.

Carlo: I have this exact same problem all the time. To correct this problem, move the plane over so that the mouth is centered on the EDGE that's too high. Hold the plane with the pinch technique I show in the video and take several strokes. Check with a square. Repeat. The center of the plane blade will take a thicker cut, so you put that on the high spot and you'll bring it right down.

many thanks for this content! I have a question: i use hand tools for pretty anything. When i straighten an edge i obtain an edge that is not perfectly square to the reference face: i have an edge higher on the left side and lower on the right side, so the edge itself becomes a "wedge". Assuming hand plane blade is well centerd on her mouth, what could i do to solve this problem?

I wish someone had sat me down before I had bought my 6" jointer.
