Process Notes: Miter Plane
Added 2018-03-21 00:37:19 +0000 UTCSo, this video is taking longer than usual and I wanted to post an update. Here's the plane in a semi-kind-of-roughed-out state. All the parts are here, but there's a lot of work to do.
Here she is:

If this looks weird, it is. You've all seen the iron, so nothing new there. But the body is five pieces of Corian solid surface material laminated together. The sides are 1/8" hot-rolled steel. That silver thing sticking out of the top, that's a bearing mount. It's made from 1/2" solid aluminium, so it's going to make one hell of a lever-cap once I cut it down and shape it.

Oh, that thing at the bottom that looks like a rubber-band...that's a rubber band. It's holding the whole works together for now.
In addition to shaping the lever-cap, I have to build the tension screw, tap the aluminum and assemble the body. I plan to epoxy it all together and add brass screws. I will then lap the sides to bring up the shine of the steel and get rid of the screw heads. It should look pretty cool.
It should also work pretty well. That Corian is dense and heavy and I don't think anyone's ever made a plane out of it before. I'm making a whole new kind of infill plane.
I hope.

a non wood material is intriguing.
