Early access video: The $2 Plane Iron

One week early for all my Patrons: I try to make a plane iron out of a lawn-edger blade. Did it work? Maybe. Am I going to keep experimenting with tool-making? You bet!

I picked up some cheap edger blades that were a little thinner than the ones you found. They don't keep an edge either, but I figured I could find something to do with some bits of metal. If you have a drill press and a step bit, these things are great for dowel making plates. The Pask Makes channel on youtube has a nice video. I used some wood scrap as a frame so I can throw it in my wood vice.

I'm sure there's a good option here, but it's not easy to find.

I found a photo of it: item 60506 https://www.harborfreight.com/replacement-blade-for-48-in-heavy-duty-scraper-60506.html

Sorry to hear this didn't keep its edge as well as you had hoped. Peening might be a workaround, but that'd be a whole new skill, so I don't think it's the right answer here. I was thinking of this post in Harbor Freight this past weekend, and saw a 4" replacement blade for floor scrapers for $3 (Item 60506), which seems promising. If I were choosing a heat treatment for such an item, I'd make it harder than the edger blade, seeing as it isn't meant to be swung against masonry at high speed, but rather to stay sharp while being slid along the floor.

SPARKS!

You still might be able to find a section of it that's flat. From what I understand, lawnmower blade is a lot like edger blade and it might work out really well. If you give it a shot, be sure to post the results here!

Sweet! Being cheap is more or less what lead me to find you. Your early videos focused on building up a basic toolbox inexpensively and that's what brought me over. I've got an old lawnmower blade around here somewhere. I might have to experiment with it, But it isn't flat like the edger blades, so it likely won't be good for anything other than making a bizarre machete.
