SPOILERS! If you haven’t read part 2 of Chapter 14 yet, you should do so before reading further.

Thanks to her lawyerly skill, Diane was able to convince the gorgon to negotiate a trade for Ysabeau’s skull. However, there is a problem with what the gorgon – who happens to be named Drosostalida (Lida for short) – wants in exchange for the skull. The young gorgon wants them to capture a pretty elf girl in the city and bring her back to be petrified.

Not only would that be risky to accomplish, it would be a pretty evil thing to do!

Even Ysabeau is dubious about the idea of fetching the elf girl, but her alternative plan is not one Diane can get on board with; she wants Diane to offer herself to the gorgon instead! Unfortunately, owing to her position as a psychic presence inside Diane’s skull, she seems to be able to bring considerable pressure to bear on her host.

Meanwhile, Reiko crawled through the sewer pipes and is moving into position in a ventilation shaft at the top of the gorgon’s lair – a perfect sniper’s nest. Unaware of Diane’s negotiations with the gorgon, Reiko is fully prepared to follow her original plan and release an arrow into the creature’s heart. All Diane needs to do is get out of the way.
