You're definitely right when you said the first 4 Seasons of BTTH is pretty much filler. It only really started getting interesting for me from the 3-year agreement. Soul land Donghua is released weekly and created nearly as such unlike BTTH that take months of no release to create their episodes before they restart their release. It's only normal if BTTH visual is better because of this (A prove of this is that some of the Soul land preview for the next episode is sometimes different from the main episode after its released). However, personally I really think they just different styles because both have very high quality visuals and both need some getting use to. I really enjoy the battles in BTTH, but I still prefer the Power concept and fighting style in Soul land. In Soul land, it's easy to catch it when any Soul master's skill is blown out of proportion based on their current power level or if they suddenly use a skill that we know they aren't supposed to have. Since everyone has a different Battle spirit, each battle content is new, different and refreshing and the power system is just literally Numbers. In BTTH however, most of the fights, although pretty cool and interesting to watch, are mere punch out sessions. Maybe that's your preference but I get quickly bored of such and I only watch the episodes once and dumb it. I have also noticed in BTTH that they don't really give a clear cut distinction between battle of lower rank masters and that of higher rank masters especially in the powerful explosions around them when fighting. Somehow, the battle between Yanran and Xiao Yan was even more epic than between Hai BoDong and the 3 elders or between Hai Bodong and the Sand Emperor. One more thing, the battles in soul land are no longer about tactics but Pure strength because this is the time to settle scores and to destroy enemies. This is unlike before when most of the battles are either a competition or just Training sessions. For every battle henceforth, everyone is fighting with their lives on the line, no one has time for Tactics. You snooze, you lose, or in this case you DIE. It's a pure contest of strength right now.

For me its the opposite, btth donghua is pretty much 4 seasons of filler, its awesome, it looks awesome but the plot is just starting in S5. (I know cause the live action puts the plot elements from the start mixed with the 3 year agreement)
What is dissapointing in Soul land is the fact that now battles are more strength than tactics like it was before. And now it has to be more awesome visually, but it doesnt reach the level of BTTH.

BTTH is great dude. You know, I finished the BTTH novel. The story in this novel is great and epic but the plot, fuhhh. It gets more epic and super awesome with anime/donghua, I'm speechless with BTTH donghua. The actions, the music, the storytelling, Its AWESOME in BBTH. It's very different from Soul Land, I already finished the Soul Land novel. The story in the novel is good, but the recent donghua, it's disappointing for me tbh. Pacing in soul land donghua, it's terrible, man.
