Oh, and forgot to add...your summation at the end about what you took away and your understanding of the themes of the show were pretty much spot on! I know it feels there is so much wtf stuff thrown at you, but you parsed it and distilled it very well, i agree with you. I feel season 3 helps to put a finer point on it as well. As for the dog...i think i wrtoe a huge thing about it back in season 1, i forget...but the wild animals running around in season 1 were kind of symbolic of base human nature when human constructs erode. After the departure and millions disppeared without any explanation to why or how, what does humanity do, how do they come back to a pre departure world. As said in season 1, when they were hunting the wild dogs who used to be pets, imagine a dog seeing their owner just disappear in front of them and be gone forever. A lot of the animals just broke and went feral, how could they even begin to comprehend it. The idea being even human beings, with all their greater knowledge and consciousness, how can they move on as if nothing happened? They certainly cant explain it either. As season 1 implied, humans will eventually devolve into their base seld like the wild dogs, they are just taking longer. This particular dog was tied to Kevin metaphorically. He caught it, saved it from slaughter, and tried to re domesticate it. And it worked. and Kevin was able to stop spiraling downward and chose to domesticate. And they all moved to Miracle to be a new family, and then it didnt turn out to be the place they thought, and it didnt make them forget, and it didnt keep them safe. The dog, after its clear to everyone Miracle wasnt special or any kind of safe haven, didnt offer solace didnt offer answers...it moves on and runs back into the wild with the other wild dogs and away from Kevin and the family. It was separated at the beginning, so it was never really a part of it anyways, in the end. but its heartbreaking that the dog made an effort, like Kevin did. the dog stays to say thank you, but moves on. Kevin came home. This shows a new divergence, the question is how much. I honestly dont remember season 3 in detail since ive only seen it once (and rewatched the other seasons multiple times), but i'll keep an eye out for wild animals :P
