finally was able to come back and finish this...im sooo glad you liked this episode so much! It really is a great one, and you are right, its mostly due to the fantastic acting (and dialogue). Regina King and Carrie Coon killed it. And yes to all your pointing out the weaving in and out of the themes of how humans deal with the things they cant explain. You forgot circling back to Matt and his feeling that his suffering will lead to the baby existing and his wife waking up. So good all around.

Havent watched this yet, just wanted to address your question in the beginning about the last episode: Matt's favorite book of the bible is the book of Job. I commented on this last season because you were asking about the bible passage Matt had Kevin read at Patti's grave they dug together. We also saw paintings depicting the story of Job in Matt's room in season 1 that he was always staring at. I am not religious at all, lol, but here is my explanation of it anyways. The story of Job is basically preaching that suffering and loss is not tied to whether you are good or bad, suffering and loss can happen to good people. So in this case, its not Matt believing he needs penance or absolving of sins. The stroy of Job, who was also a devout and selfless man, is to say that through suffering, one can see God's will better. That believing and trusting God's will...will get you through the suffering, no matter how bad...and you come out even closer to God (even though Job lost his 10 kids through God's "test", he's now closer to God after, yay!) So Matt believes all this is his suffering to affirm his belief and that God's will WILL come through after all of it. This is why he sees signs at every horrible turn, this is why he perseveres at every setback, this is why he continues on and embraces it. Especially now with her miracle pregnancy, he feels the suffering is the necessary path towards what he believes is God's will. Helping people at his lowest, and taking the stockade to set another free...all things he feels he is being asked to suffer through just like Job had. It ties into the conceit of the show beyond that, which is what Kevin was feeling when he read that bible verse of Job at the end of season 1 and was tearing up. Kevin isnt religious at all, but what moved him was the idea that maybe him being leftover, and remaining here as a guilty remnant, him continuing to suffer on this earth, maybe it doesnt have to mean he's a bad guy or not worthy enough to depart with the others. Maybe he ISNT being punished for his sins by remaining, maybe there is hope that there could be a greater purpose at the end of it all. Sure enough, Kevin then admits to killing Patti and then is rewarded for it. So its something he can hold onto for now (even though he still tries to kill himself in his sleep lol)
