Caps.wiki - The community device repair wiki I am starting!
Added 2022-01-18 18:47:32 +0000 UTCHello! I'm really excited today to share the beginnings of https://caps.wiki/ which is the repair wiki I'm starting for people to share information on repairing vintage electronics! Although any repair information someone wants to put up there will fine with me. This is a soft launch to supporters only for now, I'll be announcing it more publicly as I become more confident in how I have the site set up.
So, what is this? This is a site where anyone can go to put up notes, tips, pictures, and other information about repairing old devices. It's built using MediaWiki which is the open source project that powers Wikipedia. The namesake and driving focus for the site is to create a central location for sharing the capacitors that devices need replaced. But I would be more than happy for any other repair information to be put up, caps are just the most common issue. I've put up a page with details on my Voodoo 5 ( https://caps.wiki/wiki/Voodoo_5 ) repair already and another page on the XConnect PSU ( https://caps.wiki/wiki/Ultra_XConnect_Modular_PSU ) that I detailed all the capacitors on in the recent stream. I'm going to be putting information I have for my past projects in there as I work on the site more. But I would also encourage anyone here to put up information they have that could be useful to other people. More data now and feedback on the process of using the site will help me continue to set it up to be better and easier to use.
I've also put up a lot of my research on capacitors in general that is meant to break down how they work and what the differences between them are. I want to demystify capacitors for people so anyone can pick and order compatible parts with confidence. So I've put a lot of time into detailing different aspects about the specifications of capacitors. Most of this started out as a video script that evolved into a blog post which eventually became too long and complex. So this information is in a way what drove me to make the site. I've mostly just copied and pasted text as I went along through that process so some of it is not written in a way that I'm happy with for a wiki and there are some mistakes. But that can be fixed along the way, for now I just wanted to start getting this information out there and prepare to fully launch the site.
I'm still working on defining the standard layout for pages and learning how to best make those. This is my first time working with a MediaWiki website so I'm still learning a lot on how to set it up. If anyone has any experience or tips on that I would be all ears. Once I'm comfortable with how new pages are made and that it is reasonably user friendly I plan on making a video to announce the site publicly and will start encouraging everyone to contribute to it.
