Sony Vaio Slimtop Refurb - Extra Long Preview

Video Link: https://youtu.be/OhCZwq6ixCA

I picked up this Sony Vaio Slimtop recently and wanted to get it going. I wasn't really planning on making this a two part video, but there was a lot more to get done on this computer than I thought and it would have been too much to all do in one video. I'm really looking forward to part two where I can really get into what is awesome with this computer though. This long version may have some parts I'll move to part two so I don't repeat myself too much or give away details before I have a chance to talk about them more in a fuller context.

This is a mostly fully edited long take of all the footage from the refurb process, I'm going to be cutting this down a lot more before the final release and adding the hardcopy supporter printout. I'm aiming to get it below 30m for the final version but was asked about putting this full length version up in the Discord server so I figured I'd share it here as well.

This this is the PCV-L630 which is a slightly upgraded model with the Rage 128 Pro, interestingly, the base model PCV-L600 has the Rage LT Pro. The DFP port is definitely smaller and the LL Pro card does have DFP based on what I've seen. I had actually seen a Compaq monitor with a DFP port while researching it, so I wonder if they were one of the few OEMs that bet on that instead of DVI. I don't think I've seen any references to DFP after 1999 so it likely faded away quickly. A complete prebuilt system like the Compaq may be my best bet for getting something with it. From my research. they are technically identical when it comes to signalling, you can even use passive adapters to change the connector. So there isn't really anything new to experience with DFP. But it's a weird footnote in computer history that I would like to try out still.

That's partly due to the really annoying Davinci Resolve bug that happens when I try to speed up audio. I fixed it for the final version, thanks for mentioning it!

If you want an example of the DFP setup, try looking for a Compaq Presario 5152. It has an ATI 3D RAGE LT Pro in it and has a digital connector I've never seen elsewhere. The system originally shipped with an AMD K6-II at 350 MHz (the marketing materials claimed it was just a K6). I no longer have mine, and I never had a display that could connect to that digital port. The port looked like the DVI port on the VAIO in this video but was much smaller. The port was about the same width as a VGA connector without the screw studs.

If you care, the speed up audio cuts out at 46 minutes. I didn’t exactly need to hear it but it sounded like an abrupt cut. Super freakin cool computer!
