Getting Set Up for VGA Capture

This was not a video I planned to make. I was totally derailed from a bigger video project by this and lost about a week and a half to testing and tuning this.

One thing working on this video really highlighted to me is that I need a different dedicated area for setting up computers where I can film. I think I'm going to try to setup a desk next to my main desk I used to film at to give myself a space I can use as a long term computer setup. It's a real pain needing to setup every single part of a computer every time I want to use one and then have to tear it down again for the next video.

I have to go out of town twice in December, I really don't know how many videos I'm going to be able to produce for the month. I have to leave on the 6th for the weekend coming up quickly but I'm going to try to get one more very simple video recorded before then. We'll see how it goes.

Getting Set Up for VGA Capture

Comments

This reminds me of an Adrian Black video from a while ago, where he MacGyver’d a fairly cheap solution for CGA-to-HDMI by using a cheap scaler box which uses the exact chip used by a lot of LCD televisions to support composite, component, VGA, etc. https://youtu.be/HpfrelhokKQ — it is pretty fair from “pixel perfect” unfortunately though since it’s designed for LCD televisions, it does quite a bit of postprocessing on the image. Still, it’s interesting the different solutions people come up with to this problem which is a lot harder than it seems on the surface!

Yeah, that's the CRT masking to try to fix it's image on camera. The bright filming lights wash out the image so I try to fix it by adjusting it in post. I could have not done it, but I figured the instant comparison on the capture screen needed to be consistently similar. So that was the compromise.
