Want to make something easy for the channel?
Added 2019-11-17 03:32:24 +0000 UTCThe next video I make is going to be an update where I change the channel name to Tech Tangents. I'm working on making new art assets to go along with this right now and I'm working on a new animated background to use in voice over segments where images are shown. In the past this has been the dark undulating cubes but I'm changing the overall theme of things like this to something different so that wont fit well anymore.(plus, video compression wreaked havoc on that background because all of the colors were so similar).
The new theme I'm going with an adaptation of the simple shapes and pastel colors that were popular in the 80s and 90s, also known as Memphis Design. If you're not familiar with that here's an album with some examples of what I'm thinking: https://imgur.com/a/0VsygfW
I'm going to mix it with some Material Design as well: https://material.io/design/environment/elevation.html#elevation-in-material-design because I want soft shadows and some textures.
The new background I'm working generates a scrolling pattern from a selection of images of shapes. I'm testing different versions on deciding between limited or generated colors so here are two examples of what I have so far:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFWsgGZ0WRo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhMIlJVZNEA
(I think these are both about twice as fast as they should be, I'll have to work around a limit in resolve to slow them down more)
Again, this would be the background for when I'm doing image sequences like this: https://i.imgur.com/us9X3zJ.png
I'm still working on the particle generator in Davinci Resolve right now that will let me create these backgrounds on the fly and I just made a few shapes for testing. So I thought it could be fun to ask here if anyone wants to make shapes to use for this. I'm not 100% sure what I want as a final result for this style yet, it's more of an "I'll know it when I see it" type thing. So I can't guarantee I'll use everything that is submitted. But here are some general guidelines:
- Keep the shapes simple, 4 sides or less is probably better but that's not a hard rule
- "Thin" shapes and "Solid" shapes will be treated differently, with more or less of one. Thin shapes may only be shown in white.
- I'm not against the idea of some unique more complex shapes that would be very rarely shown.
- All shapes must be one color, I'll be changing the color with the style
I would prefer images be sent as SVGs but if you aren't comfortable with that I can trace the shapes into SVGs.
I have no idea how many submissions I may get for this or how many I may want to use in the end. I will credit anyone who submits something in the video about the name change(if you don't want to be named you can mention that and I won't). I'm going to put a limit on the submissions for Tuesday the 19th so I have time to work them into the video and potentially create some more as well.
You can either link to something here or email me at akbkuku@akbkuku.com .
I'll end this by saying that I can't compensate anyone for this and the idea is for me to be able to use it in different designs. So just for the record, anything submitted is with the understanding that I can use it any time for anything. Also, I don't want anyone to feel pressured to make this or that I do need help with this. I just thought it could be a fun thing to have some interaction.

I appreciate the offer! I can't find a copy of when full terms of service online but I'm going to bet that the rights are non-transferable. So my usage of them would be the same as under the free account type. I may be wrong, but I'd rather not take the chance.

2019-11-17 15:17:48 +0000 UTCYo, I have a subscription to a site called Noun Project as part of my freelance web design work. One of my favorites for basically any icon you can imagine. They allow for immediate SVG download, which is a great feature. I downloaded some shapes that seem appropriate for the channel, even though most aren’t Memphis-like simple shapes. Maybe you can use some. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1xQCLHm1Ke5Eltd9tjzArCq-O-uUc5zp9 (If you want squares and circles and squiggly lines though, they got em). Noun Project licenses are nonexclusive, perpetual, and royalty-free, so I felt like it was cool to pass them on. More info on that here: https://thenounproject.com/accounts/upgrade/ If you have any special requests, let me know!

2019-11-17 12:59:26 +0000 UTCI remember you had mentioned it before and I forgot to mention it. I've always been familiar with the 2D aspects of it, but not by name before. The 3D work done for it is wild now that I've looked it up. I really like the 2D stuff and think it is more under represented now. I remember it being all over. (Far more than pink neon grids...) I want to do something that is more of a tribute of than a rigid implementation. I'm trying to kind of make a mishmash of Memphis with a dash of Material Design and I'm hoping the two together look a little different/modern. But still gives the impression of the original Memphis Design. I'm also going to be focusing much more on dark colors that I've heard called more "bus seat" or "arcade carpet" patterns.

2019-11-17 05:02:37 +0000 UTCAnother thought: Memphis Design (one of my very favorite periods; I've read books about it) is typically associated with the 80s -- and the 80s are typically associated with 4:3 video aspect ratios. So a 4k 16:9 Memphis background could be aesthetically clashing (like when people do "VHS home videos" but in 16:9). Not a request; just bringing it to your attention.
