New Server Build (Long Edit [With YT Problems])

EDIT: Pt1 is uploaded if you want to check it out in 4k now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V67YPVKQsSQ
I'll get the other two parts up tomorrow hopefully.

EDIT 2-Revenge of the EDIT:
Parts 2 & 3 are now done. The full link I put in the comments did eventually hit 4k so that is watchable now. But I have some alternative dialog for the start and end of pt2 that addresses some of the feedback I got. Part 3 is just the end of the video cut off with nothing new.
pt2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyhEtor-d8A
pt3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cfW5WRO6HY

I just finished the beginnings of my new server build and have it running now! The resulting video of it being put together is 1hr 46m long so it's a bit of a doozy. I took a more relaxed approach to this one because I didn't want it taking me a week to put it all together going over everything in needless detail.

The upload to Youtube is having problems though. It's not processing past 360p. I have re-encoded it using better settings for youtube and it still isn't happy. Tomorrow I'm going to take the final render file and split it into 2-3 videos to release over the next week instead if YT is just going to choke on it like this. That will make it more digestible for some people as well since it's less of a commitment than a full length movie basically.

But this is the full cut in one video, albeit in 360p for some inexplicable reason. It's been uploaded for 4hrs at the time of this post, but maybe it will come to before the parts have all been readied so you can watch it all in one go.

Comments

I think I may have created an ingress account when PoGo came out to explain show people how it was a brilliant way to mine data to use in other apps. So I might be able to get the old version if I ever want to check it out. I've never put money into PoGo and I'm up to level 28. I've never felt like I needed to put real cash into the game, I do like that it was balance well like that. I learned my lesson and never buy used tape any more. I managed to accidentally buy tape from the IT company from a former employer... with data on it. Unencrypted. So that put me in a complicated position. I decided that it would never be worth it to somehow be associated with a possible data leak for a company because their IT department didn't wipe the tapes. That and I'm concerned that I'll get some that someone thought they could bulk erase with a magnet that wiped out the servo track and made them useless. So all my costs are based on new LTO4 tapes. The sizes of my video projects allow me to fit a reasonable number of them on a tape. I won't need to spend a ton of time writing so it will work out well. "I don't generate enough data (after it's been re-encoded) to hit the limited on that, so it should be a good solution for me." poorly explained that I believe I would be underneath the bandwidth cap. When I get this server done and start setting up some real auto backup solutions I'll see how that goes. That isn't a bad idea. Basically, just convert the case to the super micro standard. That would be super easy. I'll try to remember to throw one of those into my next parts order and do that. It is a learning experience like any other to setup something like this. I am definitely doing this on a budget. But learning is why I like doing this stuff so I'll definitely be keeping at it!

Tech Tangents

Ingress was better, but the new "Prime" 2.0 app is really bad. If you start now, you will be forced on to Prime, but apparently if a new player gets and invite from an old player, they can use the "Redacted" app, which is just the 1.0 app they've re-released separately as a workaround for the massive number of bugs in Prime. I play Pokemon Go as well and compared to the few other mobile games I've tired, is one of the best in terms of not requiring putting "optional" money in just to play even causally. Unlike most mobile games, the normal game play gives you the IAP currency and decent amounts of it too. Yeah, LTO4 is going to be the best ROI. Even in my setup where my backup takes >20 tapes and almost 2 days to run, its still a lot cheaper than even used LTO5. That said, if I can get the budget for it, I totally would get LTO7 or LTO8 as its non-ideal to have a backup cycle that takes over a day. Re Unlimited Google Drive, unlimited storage but not bandwidth, the throttling can get really slow. If you want an easy to plug in adapter for the header, just buy a 2x[whatever size] DuPont plug and re terminate the IO cables. Don't fell bad, I would spend literally weeks sourcing new parts to make cheap whitebox servers like this. Having to match what I have with what I can get and what will work with each other, and all while costing under $x. It extra hard and stressful when you've never done anything like it before and its not your money. xD Even today I end up doing similar with mostly configured servers because I'm not buying more than a few so built-to-order ones are not an option.

I did finally discover the proper name for that connector. That would be awesome if have a PSU that would work! It is looking like for a standard PSU it will take a whole mess of adapters to properly power everything. But then again, the newest computer I've ever used is from 2014, so for all I know this is more standard now. The way the majority of my audience reacts to "good enough" problem solving like cutting the headers tells me I shouldn't do that, at least not on camera. I aparently have to go for all or nothing solutions. And I bet if I desoldered it even, there would be people linking me to the digikey/mouser page for the replacement part to put a new one on. I expected people to hate the heat sink solution a lot more. Of all the things I did, except for the 12V header mixup, that seemed like the biggest risk. I used a DL380 G4 at home for a long time and loved it, HP hardware is very well done. I'm starting to hit the limits of what my rack can hold, but I could see myself using one of those as my "personal" server and leave the super micro exclusively for the channel just to make it easier to manage from a logistics/configuration point of view. I've been a little curious about Ingress, I was dragged into playing a fair amount of it's leach, Pokemon Go, and I bet Ingress is a better experience. For me, I ran the numbers for the ROI on the drive, the $/GB of tape, and the span of time I'm likely to use it and for home backup LTO4 made the most sense. I haven't got nearly as much use out of it as I would have like for a handfull of reasons. Getting the drive into a server should finally check off the last one and now I should start getting a backup strategy in place. Yeah, the metal pannel fits just "too perfectly" to not have been intentional. It makes sense to block it so it's impossible to accidentally eject the tape. I have unlimited Google Drive as well, so I'm going to try using that as off-site backup in addition. I don't generate enough data (after it's been re-encoded) to hit the limited on that, so it should be a good solution for me. The motherboard is definitely designed with the intent you stick with the SuperMicro ecosystem. Maybe I could design an adapter PCB for the headers to make it more standard, but since it's something I'm going to setup once and never think about again it doesn't seem worth the effort. Something like that PCIe extender is exactly what I'm planning on using. I don't remember the exact size it seemed like I would need, but I remember it's going to run me about $50. I'm sure there is a lot of "on the job" wisdom that could avoid a lot of these problems. I'm slogging my way through assembling a "modern" board for the first time though. So I still have a ways to go before it's not new to me any more. But it's nice to hear I'm not the only one instead of all the comments that make it seem like I've commited mortal sins against technology and should never be allowed near a computer again.

The PSU for those is sometimes referred to as an EPS12V, though ATX12V with 2 8pin CPU will work just the same. I should have a PSU that will work, ping me Monday on Discord to check my scrap pile. I think I still have a 1KW BFG PSU from an old whitebox server I took out of service years ago. The broken USB header, you can just clip the pins rather than trying to desolder. Thermal mass of the board would make desolder pretty hard anyway. xD Strapping fans on to 1U heatsinks literally with zip ties is a think I have done and have had in service for years. I have a bunch of HP DL380 Gen6 servers (plus some other gen6 servers) laying unused, same gen of CPUs as all of that other stuff. If I have an excuse to go to Phoenix sometime, I'll have to bring a couple with me and dump them on you. Ingress doesn't seem to have any anomalies planned in AZ this year, they are having a Mission Day next weekend in Scottsdale which isn't worth the drive. I use a lot of LTO4 tapes for backups. They are cheap but getting really cramped for today's data sizes. My backups at work are currently using over 20 tapes per week. The blocking panel is likely intentional, the positions of buttons on tape drives seems pretty universal, the intent would be that the eject is handled entirely by software. I used to build white box servers like this back around the era when most of that hardware was new and it was just a pain in the butt to make things work. A lot of fiddling around trying to make things just physically fit. These 1U Supermicro's were always trouble. The front panel headers were always weird and different, intending to be used with whatever custom Supermicro case they would have optionally sold it in. GPU, something like this should work: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812198087 Half way thru the old edit, its amusing watching someone else head banging the same problems I went through doing the same for work years ago.
