How to do Early Access Videos

When I really get into the swing of recording videos I usually get a couple weeks ahead and have a solid buffer. Then I will start working on a more complicated video that will erode that buffer away. To the regular viewers there is still a steady stream of content. But if I'm giving early access here it could be unstable if I do that and always let Patrons have access to videos when they are done. So I'd like to put it to a poll, how would you prefer when I put up early videos?

 - Scheduled Release: Put videos up here one or two weeks early, but that would end up meaning I need to make a bigger buffer to keep patron videos steady when working on a big project.

- ASAP Release: Put up videos as soon as they are done. But this could mean a sudden lack of "new" videos for patrons while I work on a longer project.

I have another complication to throw in the mix. Sometimes I also make videos that after I go through the full process of recording. editing, and mixing I decide I don't like. The MIDI floppy disk player video was like that. Sometimes I will go back and re-record the video but other times I feel like the focus of the video may not have been a good fit. Usually these videos aren't "bad" they just don't meet my expectations of myself. So I shelve them as a backup until sometime I run out of buffer and will release them then.

For these videos that don't have a set release date. I wouldn't normally do an ASAP early access because it could be months before I release the video. If I'm doing the ASAP release would you want these videos made available as well or wait to release it a little early when I realize I will need it?

Comments

The ease of reshoot vs. detachment argument is one I'm very familiar with. I do some photography and I've found I do my best processing on my photos if I wait at least a week after a shoot. So my mind is clear of how I felt at the time and I can focus on what's best for the images. For videos though, I've found I really need to keep pushing forward. I regularly rewatch my own videos as a way of seeing how I've progressed. And when I watch videos that are even just a few months old I find things about them that I regret. And it is a lot of work to do a reshoot. It really isn't that much easier to reshoot than it is to shot something for the first time for me. So I think coming back to videos after being detached may not work out that well.

Tech Tangents

I think it is important to get immediate feedback while the topic is still fresh in your head so if a change should need to be made, you wouldn't have to dig everything out of storage a month later and have to re-do a bunch of work. But at the same time, I think it is important to let your mind "stew" on a video which might help you "detach" from the work and not cling to what you have already done. Lastly, but most importantly I would want this decision to be beneficial to both your work flow and supporter engagement, we all backed to support you and be a part of the process, not hinder it. Cheers!
