A Short Video Essay About Starfield

A Short Video Essay About Starfield

Comments

I was addicted to Starfield for a while, but not for the reasons you mentioned: I COULD NOT stop building ships. You can make so many crazy and unique looking, FUNCTIONAL ships, even using glitches to places parts in places the game won’t let you, but they still function fine, as well as the interiors. Sooo much fun.

Is the pipes addendum still on the table?

Loved this video. Have heard a lot of bad things about Starfield but I am fascinated with your take on the sheer emptiness of the game compared to the actual universe. When I was a kid, I would seek out empty spaces on games, ones the developer did not intend for you to spend time in, and wonder if I was the only one who had ever been there. Probably not, but was still a vibe finding these lonely digital spaces to contemplate life in.

I think Starfield is a pretty awful mess, but it's not without it's charms and as usual, you're making really good points. Loved the video.

I think it would’ve been more negatively received in the short term if they had committed more strongly to the existential philosophy/periodic table/NASA game that it seems like Starfield wants to be, but long term it would’ve garnered a strong cult following and set the stage for a huge sequel. Maybe like Death Stranding. Instead they didn’t commit to anything strongly and made a pretty muddy game that constantly works against itself because it’s trying to be Skyrim while also being Starfield. It’s really beautiful sometimes in spite of that, but that’s just not gonna be a recipe for making an impact typically. It’s been really meaningful for me personally but looking at it more objectively it’s clear where they needed to make stronger decisions.

I like videos like these. Chill, and not overly long. Makes me glad to be a patreon.

Honestly I always appreciate any video just hearing your thoughts on anything. You tend you have really nice perspectives that are always welcome to hear. Thanks for being awesome! (side note that I'm loving the podcast with Mem!)

Do you reckon the negative reception of Starfield is linked with this cool stuff you’re talking about here? Can one be without the other, or is it (unfortunately for Bethesda) a package deal?

Nick Day

Starfield is weird. I didn’t play much but of everything that I did play the part that stood out for me was this like…series of fetch quests you can do on Mars or something for this mining company. I can’t say why exactly. There was something about the fact that this questline was so boring and tedious and long and had absolutely no real reward that I just…really vibed with. It felt like I genuinely just wandered into someone’s workplace and helped them do their job for a week and then went “okay bye”

Nikki Anzalone

Yes please to more rambling talks! Reminds me of Eggbusters, or Radiation Island. I feel like the production is easier on you...? Honestly just hanging out listening to you talk about what's interesting to you is a great soothing time.
