Hades (Video Review)

Hades (Video Review)

Comments

On one hand, I truly believe Hades is the best game I've ever played and my little heart breaks whenever someone criticizes it. On the other hand, this is all fair and balanced criticism that I can agree with on the whole even if I want to nitpick a few bits. Or really just one in particular-- the fact that there's extra dialogue for everything from which sister you encounter to whether you make it to the surface with a specific combination of boons is not only technically impressive, but it shows an attention to detail that you only get from truly passionate creators. The love they have for what they've made is a reason I don't just file that aspect under "that's neat" in my head. Anyways a balanced diet of differing opinions is healthy for your lifestyle, so even if I lowkey want to pout over you not gushing over Hades that doesn't mean this vid wasn't good and well made. Also the random Euridyce interlude with no buildup or explanation was both inordinately hilarious and felt very quintessentially Any Austin in vibes.

I don't like HADES and frankly not a fan of these rougelike games in general - they just aren't for me. I find the idea of creating a game that fights against you instead of fighting with you (if that makes sense) to be not very fun. A game that works with you is a much more fulfilling experience. Think of it like Dungeons and Dragons. The DM is meant to offer a challenge, but isn't meant to push your to the limit that every character dies. The DM is also part of the experience and rougelikes don't feel like that. It feels very uncaring and I find that so fucking uninteresting. Especially when I find the combat to be extremely unmemorable. So it's weird you mention Ghoul's and Ghosts because I don't think they are comparable. Ghoul's and Ghosts challenge is entirely in spacing. Where to be and when to be. There's no luck in G&G, except the luck you make yourself. HADES, you are meant to die. Ghoul's and Ghosts, you are expected to die. There's a big difference. Edit: I did the thing where I commented too quickly and realized you were agreeing with me because I'm an impatient loser. I will not delete the comment as embarrassment is what I deserve.

I'm really gonna try to be better about keeping all of this stuff organized!

I think I definitely came across as more critical in this video than I am, just because I didn't feel the need to rehash all the stuff that's great about Hades that people have been talking about for years. Definitely a little bit of a mismatch in preference for me, but it's a great game.

It's always interesting to hear how differently you've enjoyed a game that I've played. Although the mindset going into a game to review it rather than to just enjoy it will always skew how you think about the entire experience. I'm happy you enjoyed it overall though. Personally I feel like I enjoyed the combat/gameplay loop more than you did, but I see where you're coming from it and why it didn't personally click with you. Also your perception of how inconsequential some of the dialogue and small quips were was an interesting point to me and something I hadn't really thought about when playing. Anyone trying to say this game is a dating sim or a fishing sim might need to go back and have a replay tho. I was fine with the "relationship system", but it's just a point of progression to learn more about all the characters, and is a part of every single character, even if there are technically romances, it's a very scripted event without any actual choice. As for the fishing, I think it's the worst part of the game. I say this as an avid lover of fishing minigames too. It felt very poorly implemented and was more of a test to see if you had insane reaction time. Anyways, was really interesting listening to all your thoughts on this!

The random generation is one thing that holds me back from a lot of rogue-likes. I haven't played many, but I feel like the progression style does appeal to my sense of accomplishment, leveling up both your personal skill at the game as well as step-by-step perma-buffs. But I am really not a fan of, especially, randomly generated environments (at least, when they're constantly RE-generating). They give me an empty feeling. I like to feel specificity and presence from my game environments. In other circumstances, the randomness can really accomplish that goal of variability, not for the sake of freshness necessarily, but for unpredictability. If the goal is to keep you on your toes because part of the gameplay loop is to encourage resourcefulness and strategy on the go, I think it can be successful. I'm thinking particularly of something like Inscryption. It would really not be anything like as interesting a game if the maps and cards were predictable. But that depends on the type of gameplay.

This Lady has Broccoli disease hits the same as Watermelon Aura from Spyro. Thanks for making this. I was vaguely considering Hades. Now I have more information.
