30FPS is inexcusable

I b hella l8, but I complain to myself about this all the time. I'm an Xbox Series X guy myself, so I often have this option in games to switch between "performance" and "pretty" (or "high fidelity" or whatever), and it kills me that I can't stand the 30 FPS life anymore. I'll spend 10 minutes switching back and forget between the two to see if I can discern a graphical difference (usually I can't) and end up sticking with "performance" because my shitty, snobby gamer brain simply can't stand the 30 FPS lock. You'd think, then, "well you enjoy the higher frame-rate, so just use that, ezpz." The thing is, though, even if I can't tell the difference (which is hard when you have to enter/exit menus to switch), it's always in the back of my mind that there exists an option which is - apparently - better, and you better bet I'll check again every once-in-a-while. A game where I can tell the difference is Elden Ring with/without ray tracing enabled. It looks awesome, but what's not awesome is the, like, 10 FPS when you look at something expensive. Anyway, that's my late-and-long thoughts. Thanks for listening, chiiiildren, this is Three Dog awoooo.

2024-04-30 16:30:53 +0000 UTCThe only time I find myself unhappy with a certain frame rate is when it's jumping up and down and making me queazy. Otherwise, I couldn't tell you if something is running at any particular framerate. So long as the FPS for TTYD is consistent, I'll be thoroughly stoked to revisit the Mushroom Kingdom and the town of Rogueport. It's worth noting, though, that if you do have more of a sensitivity to lower FPS, emulation for Switch is still very good, even with Yuzu having been taken out of the runnings, and can nearly always remedy a low frame rate.

2024-04-29 14:12:47 +0000 UTCYeah all this fussing is mind boggling to me. Especially seeing in that screenshot at the top HOW FUCKING GOOD IT LOOKS! I've not really been paying attention to trailers cause I know it'll be awesome, so that screenshot really surprised me. Add me to the N64 barely-above-10-fps gang.

2024-04-29 10:43:31 +0000 UTCI mean, yes kind of? It's frustrating when a game made to run at 60 fps doesn't and there's screen tears and rips and you can tell the experience isn't what it should be. But I'm more forgiving toward games that aren't trying to be hyper realistic with lower fps so long as the technical gameplay is still fun to play. So I guess I hold a studio to a higher standard when that's the product they're trying to sell me, vs a game that was never intended to run at the heights of new graphics cards (even if it's a new game too). Also yeah huge congrats on the change and hopefully some more sleep! Food service eats you up for fun and I'm glad you're able to do this full time now :)

2024-04-29 05:50:47 +0000 UTCCongrats on getting to the point where you can switch over! I think about this a lot. I look at TVs and monitors these days and whenever I find text hard to read, or graphics underwhelming, I think about how I used to play on a tiny little CRT and even would marvel at the graphics of the time. I was an only child so I would spend time in multiplayer games just exploring the maps and looking at the scenery. Something that brought me joy then would feel frustrating now. Thanks for the thoughts.

2024-04-29 02:50:41 +0000 UTCThe majority of my dreamcast journey was played connected to an old commodore 64 monitor with muted colors and scan lines. Then I played it on a nice flat-screen and the games were like new.
