Funny as this is, when you get right down to it, the British Empire happened because the Dutch ran a big trading empire, they took on the English as junior partners while they were expanding, then the Dutch overextended and their economy collapsed (pretty much in the early 'Pirates of the Caribbean' era), and the English just sailed off with all the contacts and trade agreements while the Dutch were getting their act back together. You really could make a good alternate history based on 'what if the Dutch kept their lock on the trade system longer'. *sings* Even old New York was once New Amsterdam...
