My Hero Academia: Vigilantes 1x07 "Makoto / Truth" - reaction & review

Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to episode 7 of Vigilantes! OMG!!! This one was SO fun, and also did a lot of great exposition about hero society! We knew some of that from the main show but it really gets you thinking to see it more in action here. Makoto was pretty clever and to think she had a polygraph quirk is just crazy! But it's even crazier that Koichi got around it because of the "Cruller" vs. "Crawler" thing LOL!!!!! And she's the inspector's sister, that's a fun connection! Great ep! Enjoy! ~ MH

Sorry for taking so long!! Yesss I loved all of this too!! 😍 Makoto honestly stole the whole episode for me—she’s so sharp and gorgeous but also genuinely kind, and the way she gave Koichi the benefit of the doubt when everyone else just sees him as shady?? Ugh my heart 🥹💖 And omg Pop lurking around like a jealous little gremlin had me cackling, she’s so dramatic but also so relatable?? 😂 I also adored how they worked in all that lore/worldbuilding about hero society through Makoto’s “lesson”—like it actually felt like I was learning right alongside Koichi lol. And the polygraph quirk reveal was SO clever and hilarious at the same time (that name mix-up gag had me on the floor 😭). Vigilantes really knows how to balance comedy, character moments, and deep themes, and this episode just proved it again!! 🙌✨ Thanks for all the support!

I love this episode. I totally understand why some people were suspicious of Makoto at 1st because she does end up having ulterior motives but the things she does & how she acts just give the vibes of a good person. I love that while she did need Koichi’s help she also decided to approach someone with a bad reputation because he looked like he needed help. It sucks that Koichi is still looked at as shady/a pervert in a very exaggerated way after one misunderstanding but it says something about how much Makoto values the truth that she chose to judge his character for herself not just based on hearsay. I don’t think she was completely comfortable with the comment from her friends about going after younger guys which is interesting maybe she has friends but not close ones. I love how Pop acts when she gets freaked out that Koichi is bringing a girl to his apartment it’s really endearing & I assume she wanted to hide partially because of having genuine nervousness to be around others since we have seen her being self-conscious. I feel bad but Kazuho’s jealousy & acting like a gremlin as she lurks in the background is hilarious. I love how you can’t immediately tell how competent Makoto is with how she quickly gets to work on a plan for all of his classes. It makes sense but it’s cool to actually see what type of normal classes exist in the MHA world this time hero sociology all about hero society. It’s interesting to learn more about the origins of the current Pro hero system & how vigilantes fit in with the 1st place to adopt the system being Rhode Island as a reference to the original Justice League headquarters which is a fun fact I learned from the Young Justice show. I love the moral grey area in this lesson we get from Makoto with how the decisions on who was defined as heroes & villains was not necessarily based on who did/didn’t have qualities of the new lawfully defined heroes but because people in power needed a way of deciding what constituted a villain as well as wanting to control/suppress quirk use in the new system. I like that because this is about the American origins of heroes the criticisms are about violating freedom. I love how all the artwork in the background during this section it is a big reference to comic books in style even drawn by a comic book artist which is really cool with the obvious reference to Nightwing & probably less obvious superheroes as well it’s such an interesting/great idea. I like how Makoto talking about this goes into the theme of things not always being as simple as you think in MHA’s hero society. Also she would make a great teacher with how concise/detailed this impromptu “lesson” is along with making it interesting. I think her being physically affectionate & forward with friends/probably people in general is mostly just her natural outgoing/extroverted personality and partially because of her polygraph quirk needing physical contact making her more used to touching others maybe even subconsciously. And of course Kazuho goes on about her being improper/brash because of annoyance although I can’t really blame Pop when the annoyance was getting progressively worse as the visit went on. It’s really funny that her complaints/tirade goes into the mid card of the episode while using the Pop mid card LOL. I love the small scene of Makoto in the apartment she shares with her brother because we get to see what she’s like in a casual/comfortable environment & not as a student or when investigating. Also this is my personal headcanon but I think the reason she uses contacts to make her eyes look “normal” is because her natural eyes which seem to be hereditary make people uncomfortable & while she isn’t a heteromorph I like how you can connected to the hardships/ideas heteromorph explore. Although while it’s probably true that her eyes make some people uncomfortable the contacts feel like more of her personal choice potentially wanting to give people a false sense of security/make them underestimate her when investigating/researching things which does make me feel better. I think her design is great & beautiful no matter what but I personally like her design without the contacts more maybe because it’s her natural look. I love the interactions she has with her brother you can feel the love & can tell they have a great although argumentative sibling relationship. It seems like they have this conversation about heroes & villains a lot especially with her doing this study on vigilantes and how Tsukauchi talks about her being a better speaker than him. Also I don’t think Tsukauchi necessarily believe the world is completely black and white but might lean that way it’s just that he feels being by the book is the best way to bring about justice & keep people safe. It’s interesting to compare his attitude here & some of the stuff he said early on in MHA to the Tsukauchi that we see at the end of S6 & 7 who was exhausted, stressed & going more on the black & white side of things until everything with Izuku choosing to believe in and help Aoyama after they found out he was a spy which then progressed to him coming to the understanding that villains can find redemption/deserve help when he was the 1 defending the decision to have La Brava yeah, & Gentle Criminal help as well as trusting them. I like the hint that Makoto needs contact & someone to talk to activate her ability when Tsukauchi nonverbally tells her to stop leaning on him. I appreciate his conversation about how vigilantes think they won’t cross the line but eventually lose sight of it because he’s not exactly wrong but of course his sister takes that & the warning not to take risks the wrong way on purpose which feels very much like sibling energy but probably also because she’s smart and knows her limits. I always liked Tsukauchi because of his friendship/interactions with All Might but getting to see more of his character in Vigilantes with his interactions with his sister was interesting & made me like him even more. It’s cool how Koichi is coming up with moves that better utilize his movement based quirk with leg sweeps. As the audience we understand more specifically why Pop is in such a bad mood but it’s funny that Koichi & Knuckleduster have no idea & Koichi thinks it’s only because he’s helping someone investigate/research vigilantes specifically them which as Knuckle points out is risky for a number of reasons if she realizes that they are the Naruhata vigilantes. Also her snarky comments are hilarious especially when she says Makoto isn’t that pretty when stalking Koichi later which is clearly her coping because of frustration/jealousy since Makoto is beautiful & stylish. It’s wild that when Knuckle hears about someone investigating them he’s just like I can beat her up to make her stop Koichi & us the audience are like oh my God no LOL. Also him telling Koichi to keep personal stuff & business separate with Koichi wondering what the difference is and Knuckle basically saying figure it out is funny. I don’t blame Koichi for being enamored with Makoto she’s smart/beautiful but also the 4th friend he has made since starting college so of course he’s excited but I feel bad that Pop is upset. I love the discussion about the reason she’s researching vigilantes is to better understand hero society/culture because it’s kinda the idea of learning from the past to make a better future which shows Makoto’s good intentions & it’s interesting to hear her perspective on the importance of popularity in hero society which is not necessarily a good thing. Also the visual of our trio looking like demons is wild LOL. It was interesting & fun to see how people see the vigilantes through these interviews & I like how it gets Cyclops & Wolverine involved but I feel bad that even the people who Koichi helps see him as shady and it’s funny how everyone sees Knuckle as scary/dangerous or as trouble which he would get a kick out of since he probably wants people to see him in that way. Also poor Pop only being known as cute/for her butt but it’s not like she doesn’t use sexuality to appeal to people but it’s annoying that most people only see that part of her when we know she’s a lot more I bet the idol Otaku was the one who said she can’t sing. The thief we see in this episode is ridiculous in the best way with the aesthetic even Present Mic who tells us about quirks is confused about how soccer is a quirk LOL. I understand you wanting Koichi to show off for you Pop but to be fair to him you haven’t told him about your feelings. I’m glad this villain gave Cyclops & Wolverine a chance to shine taking him down while Koichi did the less glamorous but no less heroic job of saving Makoto’s laptop & I love how he talks up the Crawler as himself it’s cute. I love how the polygraph is revealed because Makoto suspected Koichi is a vigilante because it’s cool especially with the great visuals of the activation & a pulse but it shows her intelligence again as well because Koichi might not have been the best at hiding it but he wasn’t doing a bad job she’s just that clever. Also it’s great how it leads to 1 of the funniest jokes in the story yet with polygraph not working because she was using the wrong name which is a great twist with that running joke & it shows that perception matters to Makoto’s power which is interesting. Koichi & Kazuho using the interviews to annoy each other is cute in a weird way. I know others already talked about this but I love how AFO talking about how he stole his lie detection quirk from the ancestor of someone who now works with All Might that being Tsukauchi is most likely a reference to Makoto’s polygraph ability which I’ll say again probably implies the entire family has some sort of lie detection quirk it’s awesome that it’s a reference to Vigilantes showing Horikoshi’s support of this story. I agree polygraph not working is a joke of absurdity it’s so ridiculous it just works it’s brilliant LMAO. Finally I almost forgot but the reason the episode title is Makoto/Truth is because it can mean sincerity/genuine & if used as a noun in Japanese it can translate directly to the word truth which is cool. Awesome reaction & thoughts especially about what this episode talks about hero society. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

Supermonaman

11:18-12:00 lol also some of the images are definitely spoofs of dc heroes like Robin, Nightwing, Green Arrow etc. I thought that was fun. I forget it like that in the manga but they keep doing this in the show which is cool. Pops outfit is the same in the books but they definitely toned down a lot more of the revealing factor, which fans appreciated. So thats why many here took notice on that.

We’ve never met this girl before. I remember waiting, thinking she was like that bee girl but really she’s just a go-getter. I have to wonder if they gave her contacts to hide the similar eyes she has to Detective Tsukauchi. Ya know to make it less obvious that they’re related but I still don’t think I would have gotten it regardless. In the main show Stain had a problem with most heroes because of how they got compensated for their actions, among other facets. Even though people need to make a living he wants to see true conviction from those seeking to do good. Interesting how when quirks started it caused disorder but those called “vigilantes” restored order. Once a proper system was in place, I’m guessing what passes for “hero” now does not usually pass in the hero killers eyes. Vigilantes, the people who do things for no other reason than to do good for goodness sake, or people who truly uphold a certain criteria like All Might or Deku pass in his eyes. Idk how to really put it into words. Plus who can really say whats good especially when this comes from a serial killer. 🤷‍♂️
