That lack of free will sounds great at first when people aren't arguing with you or trying to stab you...but it leaves little in the way of good conversation (which is always important). Also, I like the little touches of humanizing our villain. It's makes the story all the more meaningful when they have some traits that go against the "Bwuhahaha! Imma evil this place up" that is easier to write, but not as interesting.
