Haikyu!! 1x18 "Guarding Your Back" - reaction & review

Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to season 1 episode 18 of Haikyu!! AHHHHHHH they got me so good with this one you guys!!! I never thought I'd cry over a volleyball match but DANG if I'm not proud of these silly boys!!!! Asahi's moment was just too much for me! And shoot, Karasuno are psychological MASTERS when it comes to this game! The way they used the spotlight on Hinata to KEEP ON faking out the other team was just incredible!!! I'm officially VERY hooked!!! Great stuff! Enjoy! ~ MH

Ohhh ok cool!! I knew that the new school year starts in April from Jojo lol, and I know from other anime that there's a New Year's break and a shorter version of our summer break in the late summer. I wonder when the third break is? Maybe between March/April? Thanks for the info!

Highschool graduation I believe is in March and the new year starts in April. They get several long breaks instead of 3 months off like we do in The USA

Thanks for all the tech info! I love how each person is used in the game, they really all do have a role to play. Love the moment for Asahi too! Haha oh good call on the VAs! That's amazing about Suga's VA! LOL I don't think Kiyoko realizes how much that affects them haha!!

Hahah they got me alright!! I'm so into it!! I love the meaning behind all of it too. I couldn't agree more about the rapport, it's what makes each move so special. Oh awesome, thanks about the names haha!!

Ooooh she’s crying! 🤧 I’m glad you’re getting into it. Again really great job on how the series shows in depth analysis on certain situations and characters. It’s not only a win— A GREAT WIN AT THAT! But it definitely shows how much it meant to Asahi and others like Noya and Suga to see him come back up. A always loved the rapport because everyone gets in there and it doesn’t go unnoticed. Regardless of one person making the score, everyone has that role to play that gets it there. It did great things for Asahi but also for Hinata. And both him and Kageyama doing their thing to help him was fantastic. Also Kageyama! Asahi kept going at it till he’s able to break through, and for Kageyama to not hold back and trust his efforts was astonishing. A setter has to believe in the players drive and it’s awesome he has two that believe in him. Also dont worry you’re doing fine with names. I just hear what they’re saying and repeat but all up to what you prefer. Oh and regarding the signals. It’ll be brought up later. 👌 Great reaction! I can’t wait for next week. 🏐

Since both of these episodes are very “gameplay-heavy” it’s a little difficult to read a whole lot into them, a lot of what’s going on is in front of your face. I should point out that Kageyama’s position as a setter is quite often not thought about, he’s expected to toss the ball for the attacking players. It’s similar to the center in football: he has to snap the ball cleanly to the quarterback each time. Nobody really thinks about it as it’s happening unless it’s not done right. We got a new term in this episode. “Deuce.” It did not occur but it basically refers to any time that the score is tied at 23 or higher. Since regular match point is at 25, a deuce means the winning team must pull at least two points ahead. (You can’t win a set at 25-24, it has to be 26-24). I explained this when we started the show but it’s worth recapping. Hinata is still having some issues with his serve - he hit one directly into the net, and another he hit too far. Also, our friend Kageyama wasn’t above calling him an airhead when it happened. We got a few kinks to work out here still. We saw how altering a rotation affects the matchups in front and back of the net, particularly how they moved Hinata in the second set so Aone wouldn’t be in front of him all the time. Also Asahi does what we call a back row attack: basically it’s spiking from behind the first line of players. It’s more risky, but it can be very effective if dine properly. Asahi is right about while some players get more noticed, everyone on the court has a role to play in winning. After all one of the teammates already had to learn this the hard way. Asahi getting the final point is kind of like a bit of poetic Justice in the fact he got to exorcise and eliminate his demons. It’s what they call kind of a “Hollywood ending” at least to that saga. But it should give him some confidence. I did have to smirk a little when he called some of the other players heroes based on their VAs and their connection to a certain other anime. :) It seems that our lead duo in fact does have signals and have been practicing them - also Suga is contributing in his own way. (I never told you this earlier but his VA is Ritsu from Mob Psycho). That doesn’t mean he doesn’t want his chance to play though, any player wants to be out there. The girls team was super impressed with them, remember they haven’t done a whole lot so winning this match is a big deal. Kiyoko teasing them may have gone a bit far though…. 👀
