Haikyu!! 1x17 "The Iron Wall" - reaction & review
Added 2024-11-25 13:48:27 +0000 UTCHey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to season 1 episode 17 of Haikyu!! OMG YOU GUYS!!! To be honest, I really thought the gap between these two teams would be way wider. But DANG does Karasuno have some tricks up their sleeve! The way they kept psyching out Date was pretty incredible!! It's so fun to watch through the perspective of other teams/players who don't know what we know!!! Seemingly there's nothing left to strategize with hmm...!!! Can't wait for the next one!! Great stuff! Enjoy! ~ MH

Hey Jenny! Sounds good! I'm so sorry you've been sick! The commentary is great lol. I see what you mean, this has definitely given me more insight into how people enjoy sports. Poker seems like it would take a lot of strategy for sure. And so true about the psychological aspect!!! It's so interesting to see them use these tactics!!! Makes sense as to why they use the phrase iron wall!!

2025-03-06 22:33:49 +0000 UTCHey Mei! Don’t worry, your February update is going to come. I’ve just had a fever for the past week, so please be patient. Regarding this episode, I love it. Commentary from Aoba Johsai (Seijoh) team always makes me smile. I was not a sports lover before this anime caught my attention, but I can see part of the appeal now. For me, my family plays poker a lot, so trying to outmaneuver and trick your opponent and misdirecting their assumptions about you and your hand is really fun to witness in a fictional media. But also, I took AP Psychology in high school. And I have to admit that there is so much mental fortitude needed in these sports games. It’s not just the physical energy and stamina needed to move across the court. It’s the mental perseverance to not let an enemy’s tactics break you, to remain focused on the real goal during a stressful rally or possible momentum shift. It’s the need to predict, read, and counter your opponent while ensuring your own defenses are flexible yet unyielding. I simply love it! 😍 And in an episode where the third years are having their rematch against Dateko, it really is a mental war on which team will keep their morale strong. That’s what one of the Dateko members says, “he’s supposed to get dejected”. The absolute defense against strong offensive enemies makes for a good offense, and a breaking of morale for the opposing team while bolstering your own. Hence the iron wall.

2024-12-04 15:21:26 +0000 UTCAs a fellow non-sports watcher (except wrestling) I could never understand the hype surrounding games but I can a bit more after watching this. Some of the plays on this show keep you on your toes. They aren’t just about power, it’s sometimes methodical too. And it takes a lot of heart and teamwork to make things happen like this. ☝️ I think I saw some tears swelling up. Don’t do this to me. 🖐️ 😭

2024-11-27 12:04:41 +0000 UTCI know you film these in twos, so I’ll try to just point out a few things specific to this episode: First, you asked about pronunciation - the cheer is saying “Dah-tay-Ko” (Dateko), but since I am not affluent in the language I don’t know if that’s a direct translation from Date in English or not. What this episode does a fairly decent job of is showing the techniques used on “defense,” when the other team is in possession of the ball. Defense in most sports is a combination of skill, intuition and fortune. You don’t have the advantage of knowing what the other team will do with the ball, so you pretty much have to make an educated guess based on knowledge and skill set. We also got the term “net violation,” which is physically touching the net, so even when you’re blocking or spiking, you have to be nimble enough to avoid any physical contact with the net itself. As for Asahi’s confidence level, I thought a good mental comparison would’ve been Akane’s first arc in Oshi No Ko - you aren’t paying any attention to the people around you who are on your side, just focusing on the negative. Aone is the name of the scary blocker and Aoba Johsai is the commentary team. I do like the depiction that the girls team came over to see the guys even though they just had their season end. High school has a bigger sense of camaraderie than some other places. The biggest thing in this episode, would be the “poker” that’s being played. Just as Date Tech is playing a guessing game, Karasuno is holding several cards and they have to pick the one the opponent isn’t expecting. It’s like bluffing. Do you have a good card or a dud? You don’t know until you make the decision, but if you do the same thing all the time, then you get too predictable. So the goal is to keep the other team guessing. I’ll head over to the next one.
