Death Parade 1x11 "Memento Mori" - reaction & review

Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to the eleventh episode of Death Parade! OMG you guys!!! I knew this was gonna be an inevitably sad story, but dang! So now we know how the book, skates and dress fit in....! Sadly, as soon as I saw the happy beginning of her story, I knew there was going to be a sad turn at some point, seeing as how she died young. Also, what on earth is going on with Mayu's situation?! Was that Light from Death Note?!?!?! LOL!! Great stuff! Enjoy! ~ MH

Hey Leonie! I'm so happy you enjoyed my reaction!! And wasn't that amazing about Light haha, he totally deserves the void! I couldn't agree more about Chiyuki's backstory!! I'm mad I didn't notice hints throughout like the skates, the dress, etc. but I love that they've been dropping Easter eggs throughout! Also it's very sad that Chikyuki had built her life that way, and I know over the next episode she starts to see things differently. Thanks so much for clarifying about what happened with Mayu and Harada! I wasn't quite sure about that, but wow, what a test for Mayu. It is a little bit sweet to think that they're at least in the void together! It is sad to have to see their stories end that way though. I hope you loved my final reaction too!!!

LOL here we go again!! Oof, that's a good point about how they showcase the isolation of losing something so important to you. It's interesting that Decim is feeling something but doesn't know what/how/why he's feeling it. OMG no kidding about Harada, that just makes it even funnier lol!!! Yeah I didn't quite get it that she had ended up sacrificing the other person in the end, but I guess that was the lesson. It does feel pretty shady to do something like that though! LOL it did end on a Death Note, in so many ways!!

LOL for real! Exactly, I think Chiyuki is gonna learn some life lessons through all this. LOL he's a bit of a creeper!!!

Another cheery episode huh? 😅 I guess Chiyuki felt that no one close to her really knew her and wouldn’t have if it wasn’t for skating. But like Decim says, it’s not like they aren’t trying to. It should count for something. Geez that old man creeps me out 😰

We’ve got another cheery episode today don’t we? I have a lot more thoughts on the whole Ginti situation than Chiyuki’s but it does warrant some discussion: I think what they’re doing a good job here of is just showing the sheer sense of isolation and depression that occurs when your life basically gets taken from you. In fact, it doesn’t really matter what anyone else says to try and comfort a person in that state, they’re just sitting there thinking “if this is how it ends, then what was the point?” The end of her life wasn’t exactly cheery, but it is, at least a good depiction of the mindset that occurs in someone to push them that far. When you feel everything else is lost the compassion and care of others just feels, as well meaning as it is, like a hollow thing. It seems that Decim does have a modicum of concern or, as you put it, care, for her, especially since they’ve been working together. The problem is he has no idea what the concept of caring is, so it’s just confusing - like when he tells her she’s trying to understand WHY she’s crying. He may not be able to grasp the full meaning of emotions, but he’s not curious. Also recall that they did not send her memories back previously for the card game - they’re only being recovered now. Okay, the situation with Ginti’s bar is a lot more extreme and disturbing. Here’s a funny piece of irony: “Is that Light from Death Note?” Apparently it is according to Leonie, but what’s even funnier is Harada is actually Light’s VA. (Also if we all knew that was Light this choice might’ve been made with less trepidation…) Ginti seems frustrated that humans care about the littlest things, and I don’t exactly know what he did to Harada up to this point since his body is still here. However, he pretty much forces Mayu to choose between Harada’s soul and the soul of a stranger. It’s because she actually had no qualms about sacrificing a person’s soul - their very esssnce - just because she didn’t know them - that gave Ginti the justification to send them both to Hell. I wonder if she had chosen the stranger if anything would’ve changed. The correct answer was the third option: the value of one is not more than another. But it’s still extremely manipulative and conniving to make her feel like she’s backed into a corner so this seems super duper shady on Ginti’s part - or is that just how this organization runs things? Well, Nona got busted, but I still don’t even know what she’s up to… but Chiyuki’s memories are on the way… gonna guess so is Oculus. “This series isn’t going to end on a happy note, is it?” Me: “”You know, it could easily end on a Death Note.” I’ll see myself out. 👀

Hey Melissa, I've been waiting a long time for the reactions to this episode. and I was definitely not disappointed. Let's start from the beginning. Yes, you guessed right, Light appeared as an Easter Egg in this episode. Which is not surprising, because Madhouse animated Death Parade and also Death Note. Which was actually a clever move on their part to include a character from their anime, as they already had the rights to the anime anyway. And of course it makes sense to see Light in this place, because he definitely deserves to be in the Void. Now I'd like to talk about Chiyuki's backstory. The ice skating scene was so beautifully done and the background music and the images we saw really made me cry. it was so beautiful but sad at the same time to see how ice skating was such a big part of Chiyuki's life that was unfortunately taken away from her in a painful way. As you correctly recognized in the episode, Chiyuki only built her life around ice skating and all her relationships were based on this one thing. That's why she couldn't do much with her life when ice skating was no longer possible because of her injury. Even though I think deep down she loved her family and friends very much, she couldn't see this person in the same light as before. I think she didn't feel so understood by everyone and felt like she was left alone with her feelings, even though everyone around her actually cared about her. that will be dealt with in more detail in episode 12. The ice skates and the dress she wears while figure skating have already been teased in previous episodes. And I think if you re-watch the series, you'll notice these things even earlier. I think it's really sweet of Decim to try to understand Chiyuki and her feelings and try so hard to be empathetic towards her, even though it's clearly difficult for him. Of course, I can't ignore Ginti's Judgment for Mayu and Harada, as it was a big part of this episode and also meant an end for our two characters. Just to clarify, Ginti sent Harada into the Void, but that happened off screen. Ginti only brought Harada back so that he could properly assess Mayu and what she's like as a person. And he gave her the task of deciding whether she could bring Harada back from the Void and sacrifice another person she didn't know in return. I think Ginti's decision was the best one for Mayu if Harada had to be sent to the void. That way both of them would suffer eternally together, as shown with how their souls unite as they fall... Otherwise there would be no chance of them finding each other again. It's a sad ending for the two of them, because I really liked their characters, but it actually makes sense from Ginti's point of view. But I was still very sad to see them both go like that. The final episode of course has the task of explaining to us what happens to Chiyuki, but also how Oculus would react to Nona's attempts to bring emotions to the Arbiters. I'm really looking forward to the final reaction from you.
