Death Parade Prologue: Death Billiards

Google Drive Link posted under description!

Hey everyone, here it is - my reaction to the prologue of Death Parade! WOW!!!!!!!!! This show is such a vibe!!!!!!! It's intense, mysterious, intriguing, heck even disturbing at times!!! I had so much fun trying to follow what was going on between these two men, and slowly unraveling the real events that happened. They both did and didn't leave it kinda open ended - there were some clues but they never came right out and said. I'm also really interested in our bartender, as he had a different personality than I was expecting! All in all this was just fantastic and I'm already hooked! See you in the main series!!! Enjoy!! ~ MH

Right?! I think he was a real one!!!

Melissa Moore

Good to know on the voices!! Oh that's an interesting take, I really hadn't noticed anything negative about the gramps in his flashbacks, but that would be interesting if it was because of what their souls were truly like. If you're curious about other theories, there are some really good ones in the other comments too! I'll try to spread out the episodes at least next week so that they're not "overwhelming" or anything, but I'm not sure how I'll release them when I get back - I'll have to think about it!

Melissa Moore

Ooh wow that makes it even more soul-stirring. Elders looking out for the youths. Bless that badass grandpa! 😲

Hey Leonie! I'm so happy you're happy with your new slot and I'm THRILLED with the show you chose!!! I do feel like I know more but it's so intriguing that this is just the tip of the iceberg so to speak. That sounds absolutely fascinating - exploring human emotions, character, etc.!!!! I LOVE this explanation for why they went to their respective places!!!! There's so much room to interpret what happened, but it makes total sense based on what we saw of the older man whispering to the bartender! I can't wait to get to know this hottie better!!! That's a great point that he can be objective. It would definitely make it easier to judge someone that way! Squalo and Bruno in the same ep, omg!!! I can't wait to hear your thoughts as we watch this together!!! I'm already really psyched for the rest of the series!!!!!!!!!

Melissa Moore

Hi Spadeas! :) Hahah they're both pretty attractive! Oh wow!!! Sounds like my kinda show lol! Ooooh I can't wait for the opening! I'm glad I guessed it! That's so interesting that no one has any idea of their death or anything. That's such a good point, I just thought maybe the young man didn't realize where he was going, but it's even more interesting to think that he was disappointed in the journey that got him there - both in life and in the way he acted during billiards. Ahhhh this VA for Deccim just appeared in another show I'm watching too! (Haikyu!!) No way, I had no idea the woman there was Raphtalia and Nobara! And OMG!!!! So the young guy was Gojo, Hawks and Bruno?!!?!?!? :O Wow!

Melissa Moore

Yeah that's the thing, it's very much up for interpretation!! Yeah that's what I thought about the masks too, I've been told that maybe the grandpa whispered that he'd go to the bad place so the young guy could go to the good place? And the grandpa was content, while the young guy didn't realize he was actually going to heaven? Lol Leonie chose a good one!!!!!!

Melissa Moore

Hm interesting. I think it’s one of those life lesson series designed to make you think at the end. Or have you draw your own conclusions. I assumed the masks displayed above the elevators told the destination at first, but the young man looked distraught and the gramps looked content (if you wanna call it that), so maybe its not as clear as that. Definitely an interesting and somewhat thought provoking and intense series. Leonie what do you have us watching xD 🎱

I think it’s actually pretty nice of you to let people who help you pick a series they like. I’m sure she’s been working hard on your manga stuff. (By the way, how’s that all going?) We never made anything official, but I kind of view my request of you to go into Oshi No Ko as a bit of a reimbursement from you for the RvB work. :) Okay anyway, I am a little surprised that you didn’t catch some of the voices: The bartender is Squalo from JoJo, Sun from RWBY and Veldora from Slime. The waitress is Frill from Oshi No Ko, Raphtalia from Shield Hero, and Nobarra from Jujutsu Kaisen. And Otoko, the younger man, was Yuuichi Nakamura again. You know. Gojo. Bruno. Tsukasa. Hawks. Mumen Rider. Sein. Agent Daybreak. You know all these characters quite well at this point. :) I am going to preface my thoughts on the episode by saying I haven’t looked at any of the other comments because I don’t want them to influence me. But my thoughts are mostly on the outcome and how we got there. It seems you go to this place when you die, but the caveat is two people must die at the exact same moment - and then this is how they decide who goes where. Based on the end when they were placed in the elevators, Roujin (Gramps) was in the elevator with the demon symbol while Otoko was in the more angelic looking one. So let’s operate based on the assumption that Otoko was “saved” and Roujin was “damned” based on the elevators. Yes, he cheated on his girlfriend. It’s not a unexpected response from someone completely jealous - but it seems he was very hell bent on getting through the game so he could go seek her forgiveness. Which, is a critical piece in getting to the better afterlife. Also, it seems like he understood that life wasn’t fair from his complete outburst, which also seemed to resonate with the caretakers. Let’s flip over to Gramps: during his flashback we saw a scene where he seemed to be intimidating other people - in fact, at one point it kind of looked like he might be wearing a Yakuza uniform. He also smirked when he was making his opponent suffer during the game. The lesson I took from this: one soul was looking for forgiveness, and the other wasn’t. So that’s my theory on what happened. While we’re here, you said you planned to watch bigger batches for this, so how many episodes should we try to catch up with since you won’t post next week’s schedule until Sunday? PS: On an unrelated note or two, did you get my DM? There was some information in it that might interest you. And, adding to that, I also am happy to announce that this morning we got more good news. Apothecary Diaries S2 is officially set for a January 10 premiere! 😁

Hi Hime :) If you think that the bartender is a hottie (and let be honest, his assistant too), I can't wait to see the show, because their is a looooot of hottie lol. But if I have to repeat myself, what I'm really looking forward to is seeing you react to the opening, I bet you'll be grooving while listening to it. Now to talk about this prologue itself, you guessed it pretty quickly, a bar that serves as purgatory (there are worse places to end up once dead, let's admit it), and a game between two people to decide their destiny. Now the interesting little twist, everything around this remains mysterious. For starters, the "dead" don't remember that they are, and so when you tell them to bet their lives, it already puts them in a certain mental state. But now let's talk about the end result, two elevators, one with an oni mask and a woman's mask, it would be easy to imagine that the oni is for hell and the woman for heaven, but nothing is said about that, nothing is said either if the two elevators go in two different directions. When you realize that, you realize that the interesting part of this prologue is not the result, but how we get there. The young man won and took the elevator with the woman's mask, but seems the most dejected of the two, did he really win anything other than a game? He seems to act as if he was the one who lost because he let his bad side react by "killing" the old man. Because yes, in the end, this game of pool with their lives on the line, brought out who they really were and ultimately, isn't that what the goal was ? And that's how just with one episode, and an interesting concept, we say to ourselves "oh, there's a way to tell interesting things" hehe. Also, since we only have a small cast, a quick tour of the roles: Decim (the bartender): Tomoaki Maeno - Veldora Tempest (Slime) and Sun (RWBY Japanese version) The woman in black: Asami Seto - Kugisaki Nobara (Jujutsu Kaisen) and Raphtalia (Rising of the shield heroes) The old man - Jun Hazumi - No very well-known roles The young guy - Yuuichi Nakamura - Hawks (MHA) and Gojo (Jujutsu Kaisen)

Hi Melissa, welcome to Death Parade. I feel very honored to have gotten my own slot in your schedule and to have been able to give you a chance to watch Death Parade. I personally didn't know about this prologue episode for a long time either and just recently watched it for the first time last week and was completely sucked back into the show and can't wait to see more reactions from you. This prologue episode actually told you a lot, but at the same time nothing at all about the anime. What you do know is that the plot revolves for a while around people who have died battling each other in different games and then the bartender and the girl we saw deciding which one goes to hell. But there's going to be so much more to the story than that. It will delve a lot into the human psyche, a lot about human emotions and what it's like to live without emotions at all. These are very exciting topics that Death Parade addresses and they make you think a lot, but also make you feel so many emotions at the same time that I was very overwhelmed most of the time after I finished an episode. There are also different ways of interpreting why the bartender has chosen which person goes where. In this example with the young man and the grandpa, we have that, as you have already correctly recognized, the symbols above the elevators symbolize who is going where. Surprisingly, it is the elderly gentleman who goes to hell and the young man can live again. Now there are different ways of interpreting why the bartender made this decision. I just think an important clue was that when we saw the brief flashbacks of both characters, we saw that the young man's memories went from his current adult life back to his childhood and the grandpa's memories went the other way around. I think this symbolizes that the older gentleman was satisfied with his current life and can now move on and give the young man a second chance. Because he has lived his life sufficiently and fulfillingly. I think that was also what he said to our white-haired hottie. I also think by learning that our handsome white-haired hottie has no emotions, that it makes him better at reading people because he looks at things objectively. Both people arrive equally in Queen Decim and he can test them under extreme conditions to see what their true character is like. Because a person's true character usually only ever comes to light in dangerous situations. And so you can find out a person's true intentions. I think that makes it easier for everyone to judge a person. We also have very well-known voice actors in this anime. The voice actor for our white haired bartender doesn't have that many well-known roles now, but you should know him from Jojo Part 5, because he voiced Squalo there. The black-haired girl is voiced by the voice actress of Nobara from jjk and the younger man was voiced by the voice actor of Bruno and Gojo. There are several more well-known voice actors, which I'll tell you about later. Finally, I'm really looking forward to the coming weeks when I can rewatch Death Parade with you. I'm also looking forward to the discussions we'll have about the episodes, because I'm very confident that we'll have a lot to discuss about this anime, as there are many possible interpretations that this anime offers us and it's fun to debate with other people about it.
