Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to episode 7 of The Apothecary Diaries! Wow, the aftermath of the garden party was not what I was expecting!!! We still don't have a solid answer for who tried to poison Lishu. And meanwhile, Maomao is learning the meaning of hairpins and what they can do for her! I was so impressed by her bargaining skills lol, and I'm so happy she gets to go home and see her dad! I've been worried about that from the beginning!! Can't wait to see more! Great ep! Enjoy! ~ MH

Oh ok, good to know the hairpins do have other meanings! That's so interesting about the materials too! That makes a lot of sense. Hahaha Maomao meant business during those negotiations! Also it is sad but also realistic the way things like that are portrayed here!

2024-08-24 14:04:04 +0000 UTCWhat a great episode. The hairpins don’t just mean the authority to leave the rest palace. The background drawing when Maomao’s servant friend speaks of the option has a lady in the palace and a male outside the palace walls. Then it shows the lady exiting to the man and a drawn cute heart between the two. Lihaku’s line when he received Maomao’s message was ‘wonder how I should turn her down’. And of course, Gyokuyou’s amusement in telling Jinshi that Maomao left with another man. On another note, the hairpin material also represents the status of the person it came from. Rose quartz was from Lihua and Gyokuyou, and the silver one was from the scene with Jinshi. The military soldier specifically says that they’re of higher status than him. Bold move by the way, for Maomao to basically taunt him with her ‘other contacts’. This show remains accurate, as during the Concubine Fuyou episode #3, it was seen as disdain for her to get released from the rear palace and be given to her own military officer of a lover. The show’s very realistic about protraying both the lights of life and the restrictions & cruelty of their society.

2024-08-02 21:59:50 +0000 UTCI know, that was incredible! She's so many hundreds of years ahead of her time lol. Yeah, sadly, they're being mean girls! That is true though, indirectly it did end up saving her! Yeah, she's a target alright. Maomao is so clever it's almost scary lol!! Lihaku didn't stand a chance! I can totally see the Sverkel vibes with Grams! Oof, yeah, I thought it was a futon, but sleeping on the floor is rough. I'm glad I was at least right that there's more to it with the parent situation! Gyokuyou is really enjoying this right! Hahaha I told you she gave Frieren vibes!!

2024-08-02 13:21:07 +0000 UTCThat sneaky kind of bullying is the worst. The ones you have to rely on are the ones wishing for your downfall. I know it’s not the typical freedom but I’m glad Maomao is able to make do with what she has.

But the technology to match might not be as easy. You are correct in that Lishu’s LIWs are not behaving like they’re supposed to, I didn’t really think of Mean Girls but it does fit. At the same time, that bullying probably saved her life - as the poisoned soup that went to Gyokuyou (and Maomao by extension), was originally targeting Lishu. Given her um, complicated place in the palace, it’s not any surprise that some people would harbor ill will towards her. Anyways, Maomao now realizes what the hairpins can do to her - she still needs help, and Lihaku only gave her that hairpin as a consolation, but Maomao - well, she’s a master manipulator and it wouldn’t be unfair to call her an agent of chaos as well. You can see her grinning like a devil as she feels the poor guy further and further into her web until he’s completely at her mercy. Look, sometimes guys are just suckers for a pretty girl. A lot of us were designed that way, what can you do? 🤷♂️ Grams has a lot of “tough love” and by their conversation it seems she was aware of Maomao’s condition prior to her arrival, but she doesn’t spare the words or the dusts. In a lot of ways I get kind of a Sverkel from Vinland Saga vibe - old and hard working, always grumpy. When Maomao goes home you realize just how rough she’s had it - you mentioned she gets to sleep in her own bed - she didn’t have one, she’s on the floor. Also regarding her parents - there’s a lot to unpack there, I’ll just say you only have a fraction of the picture at this point. That’s best left for later in the series. But yeah her dad doesn’t say much, but he definitely does look after her. Meanwhile Gyokuyou is sure having fun teasing Jinshi… Hang on, I just realized Maomao said sleeping until noon was a bit much… was that a Frieren reference? 👀 Hmmm….
