Hunter x Hunter 1x19 "Can't Win × But × Can't Lose" reaction & review

Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction to episode 19!   WHOA!!!  Ohhhh so this is what the interview was for....!!!  Yikes, at first I didn't realize just what a torture chamber this phase would be.  But as the fight went on, it became pretty clear that this might be the most brutal one yet!!!  Really excited to see more Hanzo, just wish it wasn't in this setting lol.  Also, Killua totally has a chip on his shoulder about this arrangement!  Oh yeah, and Gon is SO FRIGGIN DETERMINED, I just can't stand the incredible lengths of his willpower!!!!!!!!!!  So....he passed right?!  He's good?!  I'm worried for our other crew though...guess we'll see what happens!
Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Yes, so well said about Gon!!! That makes a lot of sense!!

Lol omg I already can see myself saying that haha. So true, giving up is really torture in itself for folks who have made it this far! That's interesting about Gon's fighting skills, I'd never really thought of that! And so interesting that Killua is the reverse of that. So sweet about their friendship!!! Thanks for the info!

Hi Spadeas! :) Ohhhh I see! The presence makes a lot of sense. Killua naturally wouldn't have as much of a presence since that goes against exactly what he was trained for. Oh wow, I'm scared for the rest of the exam haha! Thanks for the info!

Yeah I agree with you. If it was whoever's stronger I think Killua would be ahead of Gon and Hanzo. It's never directly pointed out but from Netero's explanation and experience on the 3 criterias Gon had something Killua probably didnt that ranked him higher on that bracket. He's strong mentally, physically & made great impressions by taking a bad situation(s) and making it better.

Lol. A few arcs down the line you’re gonna be like “remember when this show was about a happy go lucky 12 year old taking an exam?” I agree that the final phase is exceptionally cruel compared to other phases. The person that loses is going to be essentially giving up after coming all this way. To these people, this must be a much harder thing to accept than just flat out losing. Something I feel the need to point out is that Gon isn’t really a good fighter. Physically, he’s great. He’s fast, strong, has great senses. But he lacks the experience and the training that every other finalist seems to have. He’s not trained in combat or anything. In fact, I think this is the first time we’ve seen him in an actual fight and it was pretty one sided. But, this just means that he still has a lot more growing to do. However, I find that Killua is the opposite of Gon. He’s a great fighter, he was a trained killer from a young age. But he lacks some basic instincts that Gon seems to have. Especially when it comes to understanding others. There’s so much more to being a hunter than killing and I think that’s why Gon was ranked higher than killua. In a way, I think Gon and Killua sort of complete each other in that sense. That’s what makes their friendship so great to watch.

Hi Hime :) Regarding the ranking and why Killua is lower than Gon, you are partly right. The other reason is explained by Netero (the chairman) and demonstrated in this episode, a reason that Killua cannot understand precisely, it is the aura of Gon, his presence. As Killua points out, the situation does not change, but yet the atmosphere completely changed after Gon's intervention, by his mere presence and what he says, he changed the whole atmosphere of the room, returning the situation to his advantage (unconsciously, however), this is not an ability that everyone has but it shows a great potential, Gon is an "uncontrollable" element, an unknown particle that can turn around a desperate situation, in that, Gon is surely one of the aspirants who can this will prove to be a very useful hunter. Killua, has been trained to be discreet, withdrawn and very calm, he lacks presence and probably partly due to his training, if an obstacle is too big, he will flee to survive. It is his training and his past that restricts him and it is also what Netero must have seen, that Killua is his own enemy, preventing himself from exploiting his true potential. I hope that you will still enjoy the rest of the exam, even if I already know that certain elements will not please you, just say, that you will be surprised by certain outcome.
