RWBY 5x13 "Downfall" & 5x14 "Haven's Fate" reaction & review

Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction/review of episodes 13 and 14 of V5 of RWBY!  OMG!!!!
The scenes between Yang and Raven were phenomenal!!!  Also, is Cinder really gone now?!?!  I was so proud of Yang, words just can't even describe.  Also, those wasps came back in the best way!!!  Cool to know the details of Jaune's semblance, too!  Speaking of proud, Blake was awesome during her fight as well, and I can imagine that being "over" Adam is probably the worst thing she could have done to him - yet also so empowering for her!  It's also time to say goodbye to Lionheart, sheesh.  And that terrifying vision of Salem....our poor crew can never unsee that!!!!  Kinda felt bad for Emerald in a way, not gonna lie.  With Blake welcome back to the crew with open arms, our gang is finally back together!!!!  So happy!  What a great volume!  See you in the soundtrack reaction!!!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Very true, I'd love to know more! Great point that she and Summer are both kind of mysteries at this point. And also a great point that after we get the big reveal about what's really going on....well, Raven doesn't seem all that far off in her thinking perhaps. I see what you mean about the possibility of being naive here, as well! Communication is always a good thing :) Ah yes, I'd heard this about Yang keeping the Spring Maiden a secret. I'll be curious to see if it ever comes up again!

Melissa Moore

I could understand why you think Raven is not a great person and a terrible personality at that, heck I can even agree with you of how she credited herself for Yang's development is a bit cheep. But that's just the thing and you even said it yourself, we barely know that much about Raven. I even dare say that Raven's past is just as a mystery as Summer Rose herself and we barely know that much about Summer and it is vague at best. And this whole thing got me thinking, Yang thinks she knew what she's getting herself into, but after seeing Ozpin and Salem's past, it makes me wonder. Is Yang being strong and brave? Or is she being ignorant and careless? While bravery and ignorance are two different things, one could potentially lead to the other. And is Raven afraid of Salem because she's a weak coward like Lionheart and Blake in the past (Not to insult Blake or anything like that)? Or is it because she knew too much about the horrors that Salem is capable of? Either way, one thing is for sure. They need to see and understand the perspective of one another and more communication between them are required. And by this point on, there are some people who began to think Yang is being a hypocrite. Because she told Ozpin to not tell lies, half truths and informed them everything and to no longer keep secrets from them, and yet she herself told a lie about Raven of how she's gone and did not mentioned anything about how Raven is the current Spring Maiden and yes I've watched all the way to Volume 8 and still nothing expand on that either or anything about Raven's return/redemption.

Thanks so much for all your thoughts and insights!!! It's so fun to learn about things like the fanfic you mentioned. And also just to reflect on great character moments like the ones we had with Yang in this episode. That's a good detail about what Nora said, I'll try to keep that in mind! About the fights - honestly, I don't think things like that stand out to me as much! But that's because as much as I appreciated great visuals, I'm always more of an auditory learner. I do think that lots of cuts can make a fast-paces scene a bit harder to keep up with like you said! I know RT has had lots of developments over the volumes when it comes to animation, including learning to use new programs, etc. So that's always a possibility! So overall I don't think it stood out to me quite as much, but now that you're pointing it out, I can see how it could affect the scenes for you! Thank you so much for your support and compliments!!! :D

I wanted to hear your thoughts on my few criticisms of RWBY which very much involve this whole final battle in volume 5. I enjoy the fights and I don’t really have complaints about the character/story stuff however I think the execution of the fights is not the best. To me because even though they are good there is way too much cutting between the fights which makes the pacing worse unfortunately. I personally think this is because they were somewhat too ambitious with this volume that they did not have time to fully develop/animate completely all the fights. Also there might have been some behind the scenes stuff going on with RT as a company that could explain some of this but other people could explain this much better than I could. I’m interested in what you think about this. :-)

I love this finale a lot. I like that many of the white fang members are surrendering because they either realize they’re outnumbered or don't want to fight friends/Faunus. Something really cool about the bunny girl Ilia saves besides really bringing her arc full-circle is that she’s been a background character for much of volume 5 in menagerie. Also some people ship her with Ilia and I actually found a fan fiction based on this that mostly relies on canon with the authors own interpretation of what might’ve happened between volume 5 and 6 and it’s actually really awesome. I think the things Blake says to Adam are so savage and exactly the type of thing someone like Adam would hate to hear. Also the fact that he is very much alone says a lot about his ideals. I love what I would call the bromance between Blake and Sun. A very important detail is Nora saying that Hazel regains aura faster than anyone she’s seen. It’s so uplifting to see Blake coming to her teammates aid after so long and team combos being brought up again. Also something really funny is once Mercury realizes how badly they are losing he says are you kidding me but Hazel just screams like a rage beast and the look on Mercury’s face is just WTF and it’s 1 of the most hilarious things to me. The scene of Leonardo and Salem is so well done. The fact that as soon as he tells her they will probably fail she doesn’t say another word as desperately comes up with excuses to try to get out of this it’s so unsettling. Also his last attack was probably the last bit of bravery that was left inside him. I don’t particularly like him as a person but Leonardo’s voice acting as he’s begging for mercy is fantastic especially his final words. The choice to have his death be offscreen with disturbing and dark sounds was such an amazing choice especially because Salem just watches as she tells the Grimm to kill him and it perfectly encapsulates him as a coward as well as leaves it to the imagination which is often worse than reality. Also since this is never mentioned in the show this Grimm is called a Seer. Honestly I don’t think there's much more I can say about the Yang and Raven scene the other comments haven't already said except that it's so savage and shows exactly why Yang is 1 of my favorite characters. The fact that Raven drinks her own Kool-Aid but knows deep down it’s all lies is great writing. I believe the reason they both apologize is Raven wishes she was a better person who wouldn’t abandon someone who in a messed up way she loves and she probably was that person at some point and Yang wanted her mother to be different and love her enough for that to happen. The scene when Yang goes to get the lamp is so heartbreaking because of her abandonment issues but also because even though she hates her mother deep down she desperately wanted love from her. Now to talk about Emerald. No matter what’s happened/she’s done and how misguided she is I will always feel bad for her. Her reaction to Cinder not coming back is so heartbreaking because I think she believes Cinder is dead. Also in this moment I believe her semblance evolved because if you recall back in volume 3 Emerald could barely use her illusions on 2 people and now even though it knocked her out it effected 9 people. Imagine how powerful she could be if she could use this more reliably. I love the reunion so much. It's so cute that Sun turns Blake around and pushes her towards her team. It's so heartwarming to see them all together. Yang’s hesitation but acceptance to me says she’s glad Blake is back but they still have things to sort out. The end credits scene brought about so many theories from people. I think this is because people find her really interesting despite not liking her. Great reactions and keep up the great work. :-) <3

Supermonaman

Such a great point about the aura reserve being linked to Pyrrha!!! So beautiful and sad! Nora's line was amazing! Good point about Blake's semblance and the stealth mission. The Bumblebee moment was great for sure!! The fight was awesome!! Oh wow, didn't even realize that about the songs!!! And the Raven/Yang confrontation was so epic!!! Thanks so much!

Melissa Moore

I really love this episode. I think it’s great that no matter how much of a great huntsman Jaune has become he still has some of that dorkyness with him not realizing his power is a semblance. I really love that instead of pure healing it’s aura amplification because I think that’s more interesting and gives more of a risk to him using it. It’s both so heartwarming and sad that this connects back to Pyrrha with his large aura reserve. Of course when Nora’s man gets hurt she goes to fight. It’s hilarious that Weiss has her sassy attitude no matter what. The relief of J’s voice actor is so well done in my opinion. It’s interesting that his semblance seems to power up other people because it makes him more of a support character than just a healer. The thing I like the most about Hazel vs Nora is that they are both powerhouses. Also seeing her skeleton is so cool to me and what she does to him and says is so badass. I love her character and her voice actor Samantha Ireland a lot. I like the detail that he makes up for his weakness to Nora by using fire dust. I absolutely adore what they did with Blake in this battle. Facing Adam which is basically the embodiment of her trauma and failure and succeeding and completely ruining his plans. You can really understand his insanity and rage against humanity when he’s willing to kill himself and everyone for what he sees as revenge. It’s great that Ilia defused the bombs. Love that Hazel tells him to deal with his problems on his own because of how it connects back to him killing Sienna. Some people complain about Adam losing to Blake here because they say it’s him being nerfed and not being a threat anymore but it was just him underestimating Blake as well as her semblance having improved. Also some people wonder why there were so little white fang members but they don’t think about the fact that this was a stealth mission so this makes sense. It’s so savage that Weiss impales Hazel and uses a new summon. Also love Blake’s surprise at seeing her team but only saying Yang’s name especially as a shipper. Love the detail of Yang controlling her anger to go towards the vault. It’s interesting to see the distaste Cinder and Raven have for each other. I absolutely love the fight because of the great animation and how dynamic it is and how it shows in more detail how powerful maidens really are. The fact that the power can be felt all the way above ground is crazy. The whole monster comment says to me that no matter how bad of a person Raven is she’s not willing to sacrifice the remaining humanity inside of herself. She’s very much a complex terrible person but is not a monster yet. The whole giant sword thing is just the right amount of anime to me although some people do think it’s too much I just disagree. I love Raven’s display of strategy in this flight and how she uses her weapons especially because she has to replace the blades so quickly. This fight also shows how much of a difference experience makes especially for maidens. Vernal’s dying attack is awesome and Cinder’s defeat was surprising in a good way. Also we get to see how bad her eye injury really is. It was half and half with people who believed this death and those who didn’t because we didn’t actually see her dead body. I like seeing the 2 sides of Raven with her showing her caring and respect for Vernal’s sacrifice but in the same moment steps over her corpse representing her being used. I think the door of the vault and how it opens is so cool. The inside of the vault was so shocking because of how ethereal and mystical/otherworldly it is and there were many theories about why it was like this. Before I forget interestingly enough besides the opening there were no songs in the volume itself before this episode. Finally the end of the episode is such a good set up for this confrontation between Raven and Yang. Comment on episode 14 to follow soon.

Supermonaman

Thanks for the info! Good point about Raven and Cinder, it's true that there are some things more important than just physical strength or brute force I suppose! So true about Yang!! She's strong in more ways than one, and willing to face her fears and do what's right despite them, unlike Raven. Yay, so glad I guessed it about Leo!!! I noticed the tail but forgot to ask if he was a Faunus. OHHHHHH dang I need to go back and rewatch the scene with the Salem illusion because I need to see Weiss being a straight up BOSS to it!!! XD Nora's the best! So true that she was ready to roll with it in the battle which was so impressive. Ohhh both series sound great! And cool that they're short enough to watch through without a huge long-term schedule commitment. I'll keep that in mind! Thank you so much!

Melissa Moore

That is true!! Hmmm.....guess we'll see if they deal with this in the next episodes of the new volume maybe??

Melissa Moore

Hi Trevor! Yay, welcome aboard!! Thank you so much for watching me on YT and supporting me now here on Patreon!!! It means a lot!! Hope you love my Doctor Who reactions too - and the Picard reactions are actually off of my Google Drive now, I had to make room in my storage recently :( But I can try and upload them again if you'd like to see them!!!! Thank you again!

Melissa Moore

It was so well done! OMG, can't wait!!!!

Melissa Moore

Yay, I guessed it!! And that's interesting about the Wizard of Oz and Ozpin - cool that he's inspired by a few different characters! I had heard the comparisons between him and Odin, particularly with the "eyes". I love that all of the inner circle are Wizard of Oz characters!!!! Glynda Goodwitch was pretty straightforward but I never would have guessed Scarecrow or Tinman! Thanks for all the info :)

Melissa Moore

Sorry Zen!! Thanks for stopping by! As soon as AoT is wrapped up I might switch the days back - just didn't want bandwidth crashes by releasing them both on Tuesday! >.<

Melissa Moore

Haha I guess so, yay!!! I'm so excited for Vol 6!!!!! :D

Melissa Moore

Oh that's such a great point!!! Really layered there isn't it?! Thanks for pointing it out!

Melissa Moore

Yes!!! That scene was everything! I can't wait for Vol 6! So much to look forward to! And thanks for all the info, that's good to know about what I have coming in terms of supplemental materials!! Can't wait!!

Melissa Moore

YAY! Hope you love my soundtrack reaction, and thanks for the info on the short - I love that plan and think I will go ahead and do the short along with ep 1! Hahah omg remember those days when there were like 4 minute eps?! :P Thanks for clearing it up that it was Raven in the post-credits scene. Also, I agree about the "sorry". It's sad that Raven is so controlled by her fear, even if there are things she really wants to do with the people who used to be in her life. I'm hoping for a redemption arc too, so glad you agree!! Hmm, would be interesting to try and figure out the dynamic with Ruby for sure. Thanks again for all the info and insights!!

Melissa Moore

Yes, thank you for reminding me about your comment and reiterating it here! That's a very interesting insight about Raven; she does still have feelings, but has severed any bonds connected to her life when she was working for Ozpin. Great point that she wouldn't have gotten away with stealing Yang away either. Perhaps there is some part of her that's still trying to help! I hadn't thought of that about not broadcasting the maiden power. Raven is definitely not a great person by any means but for sure an interesting character like you said!!!!!!!

Melissa Moore

Ohhhh nice, thanks for clearing that up! Hmm, wonder why she went to see him. Really, Raven was bonded to Vernal too?! Ohhh that makes sense. So sad that Raven seemed to not have much emotion for her in return though! :( Thanks for the reminder about the short!

Melissa Moore

Yay!!! Thank you so much! So many great things, and wow, Cinder is really gone huh!! The reunion was great but that's true that JNR won't get that same kind of reunion! I hope you love my reactions to the soundtrack and the short!!!

Melissa Moore

Hi Spadeas! :) Ahhh nice! Thanks for clearing that up. Nora's moment was everything! I can definitely see how the maiden fight was very anime inspired! Ohhhhh such a cool fun fact about the Cinder theme in the song! Ohhhh that's what Cinder meant, thanks. So true about the parallels with Raven and Blake, but we've seen Blake overcome so much of that already. Yes!!! Can definitely see how this was a rebirth for Yang! Hmm, curious to know how the next one is Ruby focused! Hahahaha I think I know the sentence you're referring to, it was amazing!!! Hope you love my reaction!!!!!!

Melissa Moore

Oh my gosh, I hear you! Yang is the best! Glad I was right about the cowardly lion thing, but totally didn't pick up on the other Wizard of Oz references, so cool! There's even a Dorothy out there, whoa! The reunion was amazing! So true about the differences in their characters, yet so much being the same as well. That's such a great point about even one showing off their character growth here! Hahaha also great ship moment there <3 I was thinking the same thing about the I'm Sorry moment. Omg please don't apologize, thank you so much for your insights!!!! Hope you love my soundtrack reaction too!!!!!! ^_^

Melissa Moore

YESSSS!!!! XD XD XD

Melissa Moore

One thing I always find interesting is that, for all her talk of strength and her rejection of the close bonds she had with her family, Raven couldn't beat Cinder alone. She only won because she had Vernal there to help her at that key moment.

SaintLily

Was he actually based off of the cowardly lion? That's a good guess, if so, I cant believe I haven't thought of that. Cant wait for volume 6. I've heard good things 😁

Manny

You're correct about Yang. She has gotten the red eyes a few times this volume showing that she has come close, but glowing hair is the real indicator of her actually activating her semblance. The last time she used her semblance was actually back in Volume 3 when she tried it on Adam and of course lost her arm. Seems like she's trying to take her dad's advice and is working on learning to think her way through fights and use her semblance sparingly.

Hayden Smith

Kinda sad I cant be the first on here and talk about the show anymore with this schedule but i guess i can still stop in and say hi Hime!

Zen Reacts

Yes, there's the upcoming Adam Character Short before Vol.6. Raven v. Cinder: Cinder is probably the stronger fighter, but Raven is vastly more experienced and cunning, is more situationally aware and uses the chaotic environment itself as an additional weapon against Cinder... Yang understands true courage....being scared but facing down whatever it is, that's the definition of courage and the polar opposite of Raven. Yang has not only physical strength but strength of character. Raven ultimately looks after only herself. You are correct, Leonardo Lionheart is indeed the analogue for the Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz....he's a faunus and you can actually see his lion's tail when Oscar confronts him and they begin fighting. Also, I love the scene with the scary Salem illusion for one reason in particular....if you re-watch it, Ruby cowers in fear, Blake is shaken, but Weiss not only DOESN'T flinch, she has the presence of mind to POINT HER SWORD AT IT, ready to fight. MVP Nora in the penultimate chapter....she changes up her tactics, switching from offensive strikes to a defensive crouch. Hazel is easily able to deflect her offensive strikes, but he leaves himself open when he decides to charge Nora....she's ready for him and lands that solid hit that sends Hazel flying....so emotionally satisfying! and such a great performance by Samantha Ireland (Nora's VA). As regards the previews, both Nomad of Nowhere and Gen:Lock are worth your time. I think you would enjoy both of them. Nomad of Nowhere is a fantasy western in 2D animation, while Gen:Lock is a futuristic "mecha" show but has some solid thinky Science Fiction driving it, too. Both are single seasons, very short, and you could bang them out fairly quickly. Nomad of Nowhere in particular doesn't get enough love and I think you'd really love it if you gave it a chance.

John J Ronald

She said Raven was gone when she got down there. That was a blatant lie...no comment yet on if they did or didn't compare notes .

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Did she keep it a secret though? We just haven't seen her tell him on screen. I'm pretty sure they'll be comparing notes after they caught their breaths a little

Bejo

Oh, and Thank you for picking up on Yang being a bit of a hypocrite. I think you are the first reactor that I have seen notice that. She let Ozpin have it just a few chapters ago about secrets, lies, and half truths, then says nothing to Qrow about her mom being the Spring Maiden. Actually it was a bit annoying that Qrow wasn't worried about who has the power now that Vernal whom they believed to be the Spring Maiden is now dead. I was more annoyed how Yang kept it a secret when I first watched this episode. It still bothers me.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Newbie patron here! I’ve been watching your YT stuff for close to 2 years now and last week I finally became a patron, not only to support your passion of creating this content for others but I was totally impatient lol 😅 I just had to see all your RWBY stuff. I’m totally gonna check out the Picard and Doctor Who stuff and jump from there. 🤍🖖🏻

Derpy Trev

That conversation between Yang and Raven is still one of my favorites in the series, and also one of the best fight without any actual fighting. I hope you're ready for the best RWBY Volume :D

Jaune has always been a pillar of support for the people around him, so it fits that his semblance is similar. This also ties in to what Ren said about the theory of semblances being influenced by a person’s personality (or vice versa). Nora yelling “I JUST NEED HIM TO GO DOWN!” Was one of my favorite things. Cinder picking a fight with a Maiden who has years of experience on her is so on brand. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I think that Yang hasn’t used her semblance at all this volume. She came close when Mercury tried stopping her from going to the vault, but she decided that the fight wasn’t worth it. It really shows that she’s taken what her dad told her to heart. The group hug gets me every time. I’m a sucker for reunions. I’m so excited for volume 6.

Bejo

Lionheart is indeed meant to represent the Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz. In fact, Ozpin is inspired by a few fictional/mythological characters. The first and most obvious is that he is the "Wizard of Oz." But he is also partially also influenced by Odin, the Allfather from Norse mythology as Odin was said to have two ravens travel the realms and act as his "eyes", much like Ozpin had Qrow and Raven do much the same thing. Also, all of Ozpin's inner circle are meant to represent characters from The Wizard of Oz. Lionheart is the Cowardly Lion, Qrow is the Scarecrow, Ironwood is the Tin Man and Glynda Goodwitch is Glenda the Good Witch of the North.

Bill Sutherby

Such a great finale. The conversation between Yang and Raven is probably my favorite dialogue scene in the whole show and one of my favorite confrontations. It feels like the whole volume was building to it and they absolutely nailed it. I'm super excited for you to get into Volume 6 now. It's a close call, but it may honestly be my favorite volume of the show, though 7 and 3 are very close. The Volume 6 soundtrack is for sure my favorite though, I love every song on that one and listen to them regularly. Volume 5's soundtrack is really good too (as every soundtrack is for this show) so I'm super excited for you to get to that next week. I saw some people already mentioned you do have a character short before Volume 6, and then that will be the end of the supplemental material. As of now there have been no more World of Remnants or Character Shorts before Volumes 7 or 8, so all you'll have between volumes is soundtracks unless something comes out before Volume 9 when that eventually comes later this year. You're really getting close to being caught up now!

Hayden Smith

Okay, now that I finished your reaction: I am SO excited for you to start Volume 6. 6 is I think my favorite season (at least in the top 3, 7 is also extremely good and 8 has been phenomenal so far) and it definitely has my favorite. I am also excited to watch your reaction to the volume 5 soundtrack! I will admit, it's not my favorite, but there's also no such thing as a *bad* RWBY song. That said, there are two tracks I love on it that I am excited to talk about next week. Also just in terms of the post-credit scene, it's almost definitely Raven. You can hear her activate her semblance and turn into a bird right before she leaves. The only people we know she has/had portals to are Yang, Vernal, Qrow, and Taiyang. And since Vernal is gone and both Yang and Qrow were at the academy, the only person left on the list is Taiyang. I believe you can also faintly hear her semblance activate right at the start of the post-credits scene, which is why Tai turned around. And for Raven, I think it's both. I think she's sorry for leaving, and I think she's sorry for leaving again. I also think it ties into what she mumbled to Yang after they last saw each other (Raven: "If you side with your uncle, I may not be so friendly the next time we see each other." Yang: "You weren't friendly this time either." Raven, right after Yang and Weiss go through the portal: "...I know...") I think deep down Raven actually does want to be a mother and she wants to open herself up and be with her family, but she was too scared to do it. She managed to trick herself into thinking it was because she was strong enough to leave, but after Yang confronts her in the Vault of the Spring Maiden, she realizes it was because she wasn't strong enough to say. I agree wholeheartedly, I hope this is the start of her redemption arc. She's done horrible things and hurt people in ways that aren't easy to heal, but honestly I think she's the character who would have the most interesting redemption story overall, especially with how she treats Yang and Ruby. Does she try to be a mom for both of them, just for Yang, or does she think that ship has sailed? Does Ruby feel like someone's trying to "take Summer's place," or does she sort of view Raven as a distant aunt. In terms of Things To Watch Before Next Volume: There's only two things: - Volume 5 soundtrack - 1 character short I would actually recommend doing the soundtrack on its own and then do the character short and the first episode of Volume 6 in the same video. Obviously, it's totally up to you, but since Volume 6 does have an odd number of episodes, this could be a good way to make sure you don't have a reaction at the end of the volume where you're only doing one episode or feel like you need to cram 3 into the same video (though I would not blame you in the slightest for binging - I joined the FNDM like 2 episodes before the end of Volume 7 and I was caught up before the finale). The short is 7 minutes long (which is funny when you think about it, because that used to be the length of an entire episode!), and I think there's enough in it that you could do the short and episode 1 without feeling like the video was too "short"

cscotch

I'm about to start your reaction but I just wanted to say everything you were saying about Raven in the opening was absolutely /hilarious/ knowing about the conversations she has with Cinder and Yang in these episodes. I love Raven as a character, but she's a pretty dang awful person for a lot of reasons. I'm not sure if you remember, but I had made a comment a while back on your reaction to meeting Raven that I put under a cut for potential spoilers which you said you would go back and look at later. Just to summarize and save you from needing to dig for it, what I basically said was that I feel like Raven is actually an incredibly believable character. She and Qrow both went to Beacon to learn to kill huntsman and huntresses, but had to don "masks" to hide their motives. While Qrow definitely became that mask and became a huntsman tried and true and loyal to Ozpin, Raven is fascinating because she did too. While she ultimately returned to the Branwen tribe, she was a part of Team STRQ and was, for a time, part of Ozpin's inner circle, trusted and skilled enough to be gifted with magic. But it's always implied she and Qrow saw terrible things while being Ozpin's eyes ("I've been out there and I've seen the things she's made, and let me tell you they ARE fear" Qrow to Ironwood in Vol. 3). And while Qrow buckled down and committed himself to seeing it through to the end, Raven saw something that terrified her so much she abandoned her brother, her daughter, and her team. But at the same time, she does still understand love and devotion, because that's what she feels for her tribe. She ran away as much as she could from Ozpin and Salem, but she didn't lose herself entirely to it. She's conflicted and clearly has troubles justifying her actions, and she so afraid of Salem. She mourns losing Vernal and she clearly does care about her people, as much as she berates them when they fail at something. She just decided at some point that she couldn't be involved in Ozpin and Salem's conflict, and she broke every bond she had that was tangentially related to Oz just to get away (even abandoning Yang - if she had taken Yang with her when she ran, which she's definitely conflicted over doing considering their last talk/fight and her admittedly clumsy attempts to protect Yang by encouraging her not to take the lamp, Taiyang and the rest of Team STRQ would have probably chased her down). But underneath all of it, some part of her is, maybe subconsciously, still trying to help her brother and her daughter. She claimed the Spring Maiden power and /hid/ with it. Like Qrow said, the Maiden powers made the Branwen Tribe incredibly strong, but Raven didn't broadcast it at all. She said she tried to teach the Maiden originally, and honestly I think deep down she really regrets killing her. But a weak Maiden is an easy target for Salem, and no matter what she still refused to work for Salem. Even teaming up with Cinder, Raven basically tricked her into losing and actually saved the relic from falling into Salem's hands. Tl;dr: I just think Raven's interesting, as much of a horrid person as she is and can be.

cscotch

That end credit scene was Raven telaporting to Ty. If you remember Yang said her mom can bond to certain people and create a portal to them. She has one for Yang, Qrow and Ty. Since Qrow and Yang were at haven she telaported to Ty. Idk if it was only to get away or maybe to see Ty. What Yang didn't know is Raven bonded to Vernal too. That's how Raven opened the portal that brought the baddies into Haven, so I think maybe that Raven and Vernal were close. Vernal willingly let herself be a decoy, so I think she loved Raven. Not sure if it was that she loved her as a partner or as a mother figure. Either way Raven did not show too much emotion when Vernal died, so Raven(the selfish murderous bitch that she is) basically used her like everyone else in her life. I hope she redeems herself , but I hope she pays the ultimate price while doing so. She is responsible for so many innocent lives lost. Oh, and forget about the volume 6 character short.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

yes Vol. 5 is in the books love your reaction to it. These last two were so good we get to see how Jaune semblance work to Blake showing up and yes Cinder gone...forever. It was so good seeing team RWBY back together again it only makes it a little sad that JNR won't be able to have that. Can't wait for your reaction to vol. 5 soundtrack and then the Vol. 6 Adam character short.

Ronix

Hi Hime :) Ruby's headbutt at Mercury is a reminder of her training with Oscar / Ozpin as well as her fight against him in volume 3 (where she was without her weapon and helpless face to him). Nora's badass moment always makes me so happy and once again hats off to the VA who make a few words, so powerful. Our first fight between maiden, and what a fight, very "anime" fight in my opinion. And the song during this fight "All things must die" begins in its complete version with three small notes, which serve as a theme for Cinder and that we hear for the first time in volume 2 (elevator scene when Cinder break into the tower to install the virus). It is a detail that I love it and that shows how dedicated they are to the series. When Cinder talks monster about Raven, I think she is referring more to his metamorphosis into a crow. Raven blames Cinder for selling her humanity to Salem, when Cinder tells her she did the same with Ozpin for me. Whenever I hear Yang's reproaches to Raven, I can't help but think that she had the same about Blake except for a few details, but luckily for her, Blake had to overcome her weaknesses. Now that this volume is finished I think you can see where I was going by saying that this volume was Yang's, it's her rebirth, she who brings Weiss back with her to Ruby and the rest, it is she who faces Raven (in a splendid way), and recovers the relic. The next one is more of a Ruby volume in my opinion, but I'll let you find out why. For the next one, I can't wait to see your reaction to a certain sentence of the full version of the theme of this volume ^^.

My god, that entire conversation with Raven is one of the reasons Yang Xiao Long is my favourite character! She truly is, in Blake's words, the embodiment of strength! But as for Lionheart you were absolutely correct in he is the cowardly, if I'm not wrong all of Oz's lieutenants are based on characters from the wizard of Oz (Qrow - Scarecrow, Ironwood - Tinman, etc.) In one of the books they even reveal that the Shade Academy headmaster is based on Dorothy. That moment when the team reunite is and will always be something that makes me tear up, all of their stories finally coming together for them all to reunite as different people but the same people as well. Also big moments for Yang, Weiss and Blake specifically too that I love were highlighted Blake with finally not letting Adam influence her (and scare her) into doing what he wants, Yang for showing us and her mother - the woman she's been wanting to know her whole life - just how strong she became without her, and Weiss and the display of her growth in her summoning - in a way you could say her growth into the person SHE wants to be accelerated her progress with summoning! Ugh just so much good in these eps (and as a bee shipper when Blake enters the room and only says "Yang" will always leave me happy) but by far the most interesting thing to me is that Raven was , in my perspective, saying sorry to Yang for not only burdening her with this, but for also just running away again, for not being the person that Yang already was. Once again, sorry for the rant 😅, I loved your reaction! And all the love you had to give for Yang! Looking forward to the soundtrack and V6 on the way!
