RWBY 5x11 "The More the Merrier" & 5x12 "Vault of the Spring Maiden" reaction & review

Ahhh okay! Thanks for clarifying about the Beacon Relic. Oh yes, I do remember that now from the World of Remnant! That was a little hint about Hazel, huh?? Ahhh yes, it was pointed out to me that Cinder had some Grimm abilities even back during the fight with Amber, which helps it to make sense why she's so vulnerable to the Silver Eyes. I can see how from Raven's point of view, she may have seen what she did with the spring maiden as a form of mercy. But yes, I don't think Yang was buying that! Thanks for the info!

Melissa Moore

What Ozpin mean by the Relic of Choice (Beacon's Relic) is that he made that Relic a lot harder to find compared to the other Relics where most of them would just simply need to find an underground Vault door under the Huntsman Academies and a Maiden to touch the Vault door to open it. I think Ozpin may either keep that Vault door more hidden or he may actually hid the Relic someplace else and not under Beacon Academy. Also, if you remembered one of the World of Remnant videos talking about Dust, it said that you can inject raw Dust crystals directly into your body like with Hazel who just did it, most people could only handled one or two Dust crystals directly injected into their body before it gets too painful for them. But with Hazel's Semblance to nullify pain which makes his body more tolerable to the amount of Dust he injects himself with, meaning that he can inject about twice as much or if not more Dust than an average person can handled. And you can see why Ruby's Silver Eyes have a bad effect on Cinder, because she is part Grimm since Silver Eyes are the Grimm's major weakness! Salem have given her some Grimm augmentation which allows her to somehow drain Aura/Magic like how she did it with Amber the previous Fall Maiden when she summons that beetle Grimm from the palm of her hand, the Grimm Arm is likely an upgraded version of that. Yes, Vernal's name was meant to throw you of the loop to give you the twist that Raven is the actual Spring Maiden and yes Raven was the one who killed the previous Spring Maiden, but I don't think she did it out of cold blood, I think she did it either because she wants to spare the previous Spring Maiden's suffering from the trauma of her responsibilities or being hunted down by Salem's group or Raven feared that the Spring Maiden will offer herself to Salem because she's given up on her duties as a Maiden. I could be wrong though, but the reason I think that is because Raven said that she did tried to help the Spring Maiden to learn to control her magical powers, but no matter how hard she tried, the Maiden didn't make any good progress so I think Raven did it to spare her suffering. But since you've reached Volume 7, I think you know that Yang didn't take that too likely no matter how much Raven tried to defend herself on that notion.

The Leo and Hazel moment was pretty funny lol! Oh I know, it was such a change for Hazel, his personality up to this definitely makes it stand out more. Good point about there being a difference if Hazel's sister was let in early. Ooh thanks for the heads up on the statue! Such a great moment when Jaune unlocked his semblance! Vernal was dedicated to her tribe for sure. Ohhh Cinder and Raven's conversation was great! Ohhhh that's what happened with her arm! Nasty, but effective lol. Ick, that is a brutal way to kill someone! The twist was amazing!!! Thank you so much for your support and compliments!!! ^_^

Melissa Moore

Agreed!!!! And that's interesting about the moon! Good point about Summer and Raven, I could definitely see that! So true that Jaune's reactions were so intense and well done by his VA! Ugh, Cinder's line to him!! Weiss' line was great!! And yes, it's hard to compliment Cinder but her methods were effective. LOL!!!! That's probably true about Cinder, to each his/her own right??? They've got cliffhangers down for sure!!! Thanks so much for your insights!

Melissa Moore

Now onto episode 12 I really love it. The way the episode starts with the echoing of Jaune screaming out Weiss’s name is so good but chilling. I will never not find how Leo bounces off of Hazel and his reaction completely hilarious. The way Oscar is so desperate to wake Ruby up just shows how much he believes in her and was inspired by her speech earlier in the volume. Seeing Hazel so enraged and out for blood after being a very quiet/calm person and not liking killing is a great twist and shocking. That combined with finally seeing someone who injects dust into their body and being like a combination of the Hulk and Bane is terrifying. Also I don’t remember if I told you but his voice actor William Orendorf is the same person who does the vocal noises of all or most of the Grimm and I think he did a fantastic job here. His fighting style is basically just a berserker from fantasy with elemental stuff added on. He is already terrifying enough but then even Oz is terrified which honestly is scarier to me considering all his experience. Seeing Hazel be on par or better than Qrow makes him just as threatening a villain as Tyrian. Some people don’t like Hazel’s backstory because they think it’s too simplistic or doesn’t make sense but I think it’s great and another great twist on a classic fairytale. Just because something is simplistic doesn’t make it bad also while he probably should blame Salem instead of Oz because a Grimm probably killed his sister but someone who is grieving will not always make logical decisions and is easy to manipulate so I think it makes sense. I love Oscar’s response because making his own decisions is really important to his character and he learned the risks and if someone knows that obviously his sister probably would think that whatever happened the risk was worth it to fight for what they thought was right. The only point Hazel might have is if his sister was let in early to Beacon like Ruby. I definitely think it was necessary but it’s unfortunate that to save Oscar he had to commit a violation by taking control of his body forcibly. During the fight that follows I think it’s great that even though it’s a weaker version we got to see the move consisting of quick strikes we haven’t seen since volume 3. You have to admit that attacking Weiss to cause chaos was a good strategy on Cinder’s since it allowed her to go to the vault. Also the statue’s design is important so remember it. This is dark humor but when Ren says Weiss’s injuries are bad I think most people were like oh really you don’t say. Seeing Jaune unlock his semblance here I think is perfect. Also with his sword and shield as well as this new ability even though I don’t play it he’s basically the Paladin class from D and D. People criticize Ruby taking his hands off the wound because she had no idea if it would still work but honestly I think it was just a way to show that he can use his semblance from a distance. Actually I really admire Vernal’s motivations to protect her tribe even if I don’t think they are good guys. Also of course Cinder would try to make it seem bad. The conversation between Cinder and Raven is so intense and I love it. The surprise attack and Grimm arm reveal is so well done. Basically there’s a Grimm parasite combined with her body that had to be added on to and increased by Salem after what happened in volume 3. It’s also a really brutal way to kill someone because it basically absorbs aura to get the soul and the maiden power. Finally Raven being the spring maiden is the single most shocking/best twist of the show up to this point. One more clue about this is Raven deliberately telling Vernal not to “waste” her power on Weiss. This was a great reaction. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

I love this episode. The beginning with them approaching the school is especially great because of the focus on the full moon. I always love when this show shows the moon I always think especially with the new animation it looks beautiful. Something really interesting that was confirmed in commentary by RT is that the moon of Remnant is not tidally locked like ours is because it rotates in a way where you can see every side of it as it changes phases unlike ours which is always facing one side. I really enjoy the interactions between Raven and Qrow not because it’s likable but feels like a really well-written estranged/broken family especially him being willing to shoot at his sister in her vulnerable bird form. I love the hopeful and inspirational speech Ruby gives to Raven but I think the really interesting thing is Raven’s response because it implies at least to me that when team STRQ was together there might have been some bad blood between Raven & Summer at least one sidedly from Raven. Everything after this is basically things going from bad to worse with so many villains coming together at the same time. It’s unfortunate that while Oz and Qrow were suspicious of Leo they did not suspect a trap or for the betrayal to go so deep. All of Jaune's reactions to Cinder are so upsetting but so well done. You really have to hand it to his voice actor Miles Luna for how much emotion he puts into his performance showing off all the pain, anger and grief the character has inside. I think the way Cinder acts about other people with condescension and disregard can be annoying to some people but in my opinion it makes her a really good villain to hate. Her saying she doesn’t know who he is is the single most fucked up and savage thing in this show and honestly I think it might’ve been just to make him angrier. I really love the matchups/fights they are fitting and work for different connections between characters. I love that Emerald is shown to not really care about doing evil but more feels so indebted to Cinder giving her more complexity. There are comparisons of Leo’s dust infused shield to the duel disks from Yugioh but I do think it’s cool how it combines different dust to make powerful attacks. Also I love the twist with Oscar actually being in control and it’s quick but it’s revealed that Leonardo is a Lion Faunus which fits with his fairytale inspiration being the Cowardly Lion from Wizard of Oz. I think it’s unfortunate that Leo is so far gone because before this maybe there was a chance for him to redeem himself but after getting so many people killed and being willing to betray anyone if he thinks that it will save him. Also keep in mind he’s the one that got Cinder’s into Beacon so everything that happened in volume 3 is indirectly his fault so even more guilt can be placed on him. Vernal’s laser chakram/boomerang weapon is so cool. I think the main reason Weiss lost her fight is because at this point she’s too reliant on her summoning against someone who is extremely skilled. Although I do love her line of being more than a name it’s perfect for her character. Seeing Jaune having become so much stronger and more skilled is so satisfying however he didn’t really stand a chance against Cinder with how powerful she is. Also Cinder is basically just playing with him to make him angrier is actually a good strategy when fighting someone even if I dislike her. Jaune’s self-sacrificing nature and how much he cares about his friends is really heartwarming and I love it with how it fits with who he’s based on but I do think it’s upsetting that he doesn’t consider himself worth as much as his friends. Also without being weird I’m pretty sure some people would like to be stepped on by Cinder LOL. Finally that cliffhanger is just cruel RT I think has perfected the art of the cliffhanger. I really wanted to talk about things that other comments didn’t talk about. Episode 12 thoughts coming soon.

Supermonaman

Oh I hadn't thought of that actually!!!!!

Melissa Moore

You are so welcome and thank you! Ohhhhh that's probably why it sounded familiar then!!! Thanks for clearing that up. Omg yes, totally forgot about the Joan of Arc thing, but that really does make sense with his semblance!!! Great point about the details - they do a great job of illustrating things like Jaune's progress, clues about Raven, etc. That's crazy about Raven's movements!!! I guess Raven is all about taking her opponent off guard, whether it's in battle or even in setting up the whole scenario in general. Thanks!

Melissa Moore

I’ve been saying it since V5 E11 came out that if Jaune had just swung his sword instead of stabbing at Cinder that everyone’s lives would’ve been a lot better.

dainbramage7

I couldn't wait for these episodes, because of the multiple shocks and reveals. Such fun. Thanks for the reaction! Don't worry, you haven't heard Gretchen's name before. If Hazel and Gretchen sound familiar, there is another fairy tale of a brother and sister with similar Germanic names that you might be thinking of. Jaune is based on Joan of Arc, so it's not surprising that he has a bit of a martyr complex in this fight, or that his semblance might be based in self sacrifice. Again, there are a lot of subtle animation touches in these episodes. Like the shockwave from Jaune's first attack being enough to shake the chains on the statue. He's definitely gotten stronger. Cinder's genuine fear as she barely makes it out of the way of Jaune's attack in time, turning into sheer rage at being caught in a moment of weakness, says a lot about her personality. The greatest one I think though is in the Vault watching Raven expecting a fight: She puts on her helmet early, then later nonchalantly puts one hand on her hip while talking, then the other on her scabbard to match. Looking ostensibly relaxed, but in the next second you can see she takes advantage of the placement to subtly move her right hand towards her sword hilt. It's only obvious in hindsight the number of steps she took to set that up. In fact several things about her seem to be about disguising one action with another, so her opponent won't see it coming when she strikes. Like the deal with Cinder in the first place, setting up a situation with the most potential for chaos she can exploit, disguised to look as simply wanting her brother out of the way for convenience.

Beowolf Chow

OMG same!!!!! >.<

Melissa Moore

Lol no worries, that hardly makes you a liar! :D I got it all worked out and actually just watched 13 and 14!!!! :D

Melissa Moore

Hahahah yup, that sums it up!!!!

Melissa Moore

Hahahahaha!!!!! I love your anticipated reaction to my reaction!!! XD

Melissa Moore

Great point! And yes, just seeing him stand a chance with one of his moves against Cinder was so satisfying! Got it, thanks for clearing that up about Ruby and the eye blast! I got caught up in the moment and didn't realize all the details!

Melissa Moore

Ah yes!!! Thank you!!! That makes sense based on the names!

Melissa Moore

Yay, thank you so much!!!! SOOO close to being caught up now! Hope you love next week's reactions too!!!

Melissa Moore

Yes, the mask thing is such a big clue!!! And yes, the very intentional thank you to Vernal on that one occasion! Ohhh so she wasn't even really Vernal?! :O Lol good point about the name situation, she's one to talk!!! Thanks for the info!

Melissa Moore

Oh man!!!! I can totally see the trust issues haha. I would have died if I had to wait! *_*

Melissa Moore

Hahahahaha I instantly went into denial mode!!! :P Me too, thankfully I was actually right to do it for once hehe. Still not over the fact that they killed Pyrrha like that!!!! :( Such an amazing twist with Raven! I'm so happy you enjoyed my reaction, hope you love my reaction to the finale too!!! Yessss so much closer to being caught up now, yay!!! XD Thanks!

Melissa Moore

OMG yes!!!! Really the worst thing she could have said IMO!!! :(

Melissa Moore

Ah okay, glad I was onto something with that theory...but that's so brutal and sad!

Melissa Moore

I know, it was a big contrast for him! And that's a great analogy about Ozpin and Dumbledore!! Oh good question about Cinder....?!!? Maybe!!!

Melissa Moore

Thank you so much, so happy you enjoyed them!!! Hahaha a picture worth a thousand words right lol?! Hope you love next week's reactions too!

Melissa Moore

Hi Spadeas! :) Hahaha, so true about Leo! And yes, that line shows so much about Weiss' journey!! Ohhh did not notice the spear, such a great detail though! CRWBY took years off my life haha, and you were totally right about me screaming!!!! Thanks for clearing that up about Ruby's eyes and the arm! Ohhhh Hanzel and Gretel, that makes sense! Got it, so the note that Pyrrha made about his aura is important, but otherwise that event didn't have anything to do with his semblance per se! OH yes you're so right about Raven wearing the mask! Love the line from Ruby too!!! Yesssss I'm always up for some Nora goodness!!! XD Thanks so much!

Melissa Moore

I could totally see that! Glad I'm onto something with my theory. Yes, Jaune!! Ah, thanks for clearing that up about Pyrrha! And about what Hazel did. Yikes!! Ohhhh that's what happened with Ruby, thanks for the info! I was wondering why it didn't knock her out for a while like last time. Ahhhh yes the arm, definitely noticed it at the end but didn't put it together that it's a Grimm arm until someone mentioned it! Thanks for all the info and for your compliments, so happy you enjoyed it! Hope you love my next reactions too! ^_^

Melissa Moore

These episodes gave me heart palpitations 💓 😩

Manny

Hi Hime turns out im a dirty liar and forgot that 13 and 14 are separate chapters

Zen Reacts

At the end of the first episode all I could think of was Cleveland in his bathtub "No! No! No! No! No! No!"

Randall Musgrave

I was literally taking a sip from my cup when you reacted to Weiss being stabbed and I literally let out a sigh and said, "yes, feel the pain we all felt' before drinking some more! Hahaha!! XD

Lilith Night

"Do you really think you had a chance against me? YOU!?" -- Cinder Well, Jaune did almost put a sword through your face so yeah, for a second there I bet he did. That he landed a hit at all was incredibly emotionally satisfying for me....it showed Cinder isn't invulnerable. Also, yes, the Eye Blast did partially exhaust Ruby, but Emerald also knocked her out with her weapon, cutting the Eye Blast short. Her Eye Blast at Beacon targeted not only Cinder but also the giant Grimm Wyvern that she turned to stone....hence her longer "down" time, I guess.

John J Ronald

Hazel + Gretchen = Hansel & Gretel , btw. That's his fairy tale inspiration.

John J Ronald

Great reaction, still cant wait for your reactions for volume 6 onwards yay your nearly there xxx

Darren

Someone else touched on it, but since you mentioned going back and looking for clues of Raven being the maiden, one thing you'll notice is that Raven almost always has her mask on when Vernal appears to be using her powers, likely to hide the fire eyes the maidens sometimes get when they go all out. She makes a point of putting it on when Cinder, Watts, Emerald, and Mercury show up to make a deal with her and Vernal "demonstrates" her powers to them, then she also makes sure to put it on when they head towards the vault in this episode. The only time she uses her powers and doesn't have her mask on is when she summons a quick lighting strike to break up the fight between Yang and her tribe, but she makes it a point to say thank you to Vernal after doing so. Also, while it's never stated in the show, one of the show's writers confirmed that "Vernal" is actually not her real name, but a name she took on as Raven's decoy. This is slightly hinted at earlier in the volume when Raven remarks at how Cinder's full name "Cinder Fall" is so conveniently appropriate that Cinder likely chose it herself, which is a bit hypocritical when the spring maiden she has working for her is called "Vernal".

Hayden Smith

We had to suffer a whole week between chapters 11 and 12 wondering if they would kill Weiss off. To paraphrase another reactor "RWBY has given us trust issues".

Daimah

omg, Hime! Haha, the denial was really strong with you after episode 11. I'm glad you hold out though because it did pay off! I remember watching that and feeling heartbroken because it was eerily similar to how Pyrrha died and I was like "NoPe". :) Also, the Raven reveal at the end would always be great to rewatch because it was so unexpected! It was definitely one of my favorite plot twists of the show. Amazing reactions and video! I'll see you next time for the finale!! We are in the final stretch now. Let's go!

Fay

“Who are you again?” That was brutal. Press F in the chat for Jaune.

Bejo

Absolutely...Raven killed the previous Spring Maiden to steal her powers...Raven most likely gained her trust to the point that the poor girl trusted and thought the world about her then most likleymurdered the Maiden.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Hazel has been very calm and rational these past two volumes. Seeing him rage at the sight of Ozpin is kinda terrifying. Which I kinda get. I always saw Ozpin as a Dumbledore type that actually gets called out for using children/teenagers in his war against evil (in this case Salem instead of Voldy). Also, did Cinder just randomly shoot a fire blast through Raven’s portal and hoped that it would hit Ruby? Because from what we see, Raven’s portals aren’t see through.

Bejo

amazing reaction to these episodes, a lot of big reveals. Your face at the end of episode 11 was what i was waiting for can't wait for next week

Ronix

Hi Hime :D It will always make me laugh that Leo asks why the group brought their weapons, when he even carries his ... Leo frankly. I love that the evolution of Weiss reaches its peak in this season with "I'm more than a name", she who swore by that in the first volume, shows her maturity just with this sentence. If you're careful, the spear used by Cinder, is a copy of Pyrah's weapon, and Weiss's position at the end of episode 11, is also a reminder of Pyrah's position when Cinder killed her... CRWBY really hit hard this time (and i told you that you were going to scream at your screen for this scene). For the fact that Ruby is out, it's because Emerald knocked her out to protect Cinder, and now that she's revealed her left arm is made of Grimm, you can understand her reaction to Ruby's silver eyes even better. Now that we know the story of Hazel, you see what fairy tale it comes from, Hazel and Gretchen, for Hansel and Gretel. And what he does is basically inject himself with dust directly into him, to use their ability, in this case lightning dust. Concerning Jaune and Pyrah, she had just unlocked his aura for him to use by himself afterwards, and had added that he had a lot of it. Now that you know Raven is the spring maiden, the scene where Vernal uses maiden powers and Raven was wearing her mask takes on a whole new meaning. Soon volume 5 is finished, I'm sure you'll like the finale. And you got a badass moment from Ruby here, when Yang ask her if she's okay and she answers "No, i'm angry", then get ready for badass Nora next :D.

Spadeas

One of the best reveals of the show in my opinion! As for your theory it is a good one for sure, and they have indeed mentioned it or at least hinted at it back in the original explanation in V3. And Jaune! Jaune was awesome these two eps, but as for the Pyrrha bit, back in V1 Pyrrha only unlocked his aura cause he hadnt already. But important info to have was that Pyrrha said Jaune had alot of aura. What Hazel did was inject two electricity dust crystals (pure energy) directly into his body (hardcore stuff). Oh and for Ruby, I'm pretty sure you missed it cuz it is sort of hard to catch in the chaos of things but Emerald actually knocked Ruby out before she could fully use her eyes. Oh and did you notice the weirdness with Cinder's arm? And how after Ruby used her eyes Cinder only clutched her arm in pain? But uh yeah! Amazing rwby reaction as always, looking forward to your next set!
